I just installed an F&B tb on my 3.9, and when I had everything off I looked down into the intake manifold. There's a nice coating of oil and carbon and crap all over the inside, but nothing pooled up in there so that's good. I don't think it's causing me any problems, I just want to know if it should look like that on a 40k truck. Think I would benefit running some seafoam through the tb, or I might as well leave it the way it is?

I have another question for anyone who installed an F&B 48mm. Did you need to add a second airhat gasket for a stock airhat? The hat doesn't fit down far enough to hit the gasket. For now I glued the gasket to the bottom of the airhat in order to keep a better seal, but I'll see if I can get another gasket at the dealer.

The light coating of oil and crap is caused from the blow-by gases being drawn into the intake thru the pcv. If you look at the F&B instructions they will tell you that the stock air hat must be modified to fit. The very outside of a stock tb measures a standard 5 1/8. The stock air hat has areas that fit slightly inside and around the tabs on the stock tb. This means that the stock air hat is about one quarter inch smaller than the 5 1/8 in. diameter of the F&B.

I didn't get any instructions with my tb. Sam told me about the s-bolt, I thought that was the only modification needed. What do I need to do, grind down those tabs on the inside rim of the airhat?

Well, I was going to post a new thread about this problem, but it might be related to the airhat leaking air in so I'll ask here. I just took the first drive after installing the F&B and I have a couple of problems.
The first is a wierd noise during a shift. When I accelerate slowly, after the shift to 2nd, if I take my foot off the gas abruptly, it shifts to 3rd after a couple of seconds. That shift's always been a hard shift since I put in the Transgo, but no problems with it. Now after the tb install, I get a loud tick kind of a noise on that shift every time. It doesn't happen if I'm still giving a little throttle during the shift to 3rd, only does when I let go of the gas. I checked the tv cable and it's fine.
The other problem is the idle speed only in park or neutral. With the truck in drive and the brakes applied, my idle is rock steady at 750rpm, actually seems smoother after the tb install, but in park or neutral, once the engine is warmed up, the idle goes up to around 900rpm and keeps wavering. This sounds like it could be air leaking into the airhat, right? What I'm more worried about is the shifting noise, I really hope that's being caused by the same thing although I don't see how.

The RPM range is fine, the PCM has to learn the new air flow. It may take as little as 200 miles, or as much as 2000 miles. It will settle down after this learning period. As for the shifting problem...I don't know what to tell you(I am sure someone else on this board has had the same problem). I have owned strictly manual tranny vehicles, and don't have alot of experience with the autos.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Blue, I recently replaced my belly pan gasket, and removed my throttle body, and ever since that, I have the same type of ticking noise. Mine is when it's shifting into overdrive though. Let me know what you find, because I haven't been able to find anything else out of the ordinary.

bluedak11, yes remove the material that extends beyond the slots in air hat. This should make the diameter approximately 5 1/8 inches. The air leaking around the air hat should cause an idle problem. It is merely unfiltered air. A vacuum leak would be another story. Vacuum leaks occur below the throttle plates.

N56629, you meant to say the air hat leaking shouldn't cause an idle problem, right? I realized that on my own after thinking about it a little more clearly. Got the hat fitting nice with a dremel tool and a heavy grit cylindrical sandpaper bit. The idle rpm does seem to be slowly steadying out. I fixed the shifting noise, too. I still can't figured out what caused the problem, but moving the tv cable back a little closer to stock fixed it. I always had it set to higher shift points/pressure because the shift kit seemed to lower the shift points to unbearable lows when accelerating lightly and I had to compensate for it. That's why I always had that delayed upshift after came off the gas, but it never made a wierd noise until now. I just set it back far enough to not really affect the shift points too much, but upshift as soon as I let off the gas, now it's smooth.
