 Subject: New rear speed sensor problem...HELP!

1999 Dodge Dakota, auto, sport, 2wd, extended cab...brake and abs lights lit up and speedometer quit working so I read up on here and changed the rear speed sensor. After resetting the battery the lights went away, but now the speedometer and odometer quit working. Also after about an hour of driving the check engine light came on. Could I have installed the wrong sensor? The guy at the dealership chuckled to his buddy when he sold me the part....1-05014787aa. Other posts list 56028187AE as the part that I need. Is there a difference between the two? Please help me out!

There is a three wire sensor in the tailshaft on
the trans that runs the speedo
The sensor on the dif is called a distance sensor
and is for the anti lock brakes

Yeah I replaced the one on the differential because my brake and abs dummy lights were coming on and speedo only working above 20mph. Well it fixed the dummy lights, but now my speedo and odometer do not work at all and the check engine light has come on. I think they sold me the wrong part. Can anyone confirm whether 1-05014787aa and 56028187AE are interchangeable? If not then which is the one I need for my vehicle? Thank you for your help guys.

Try calling another dealership to see what part # they give you. Check to see if there are any #'s on the old sensor you took off too, and see if your new sensor has them.

Here is the part number for the one I installed today on my 1999 Dakota V6, 3.9 2x2. Dealer only part, and it was $35. Took about 20 minutes to install.

actually you can call oreillys they carry the part that will fix it now and its only 16.99 for the 6 month waranty. the speed sensor on the transmission is what is controlling you speedometer, remove positive battery cable, take 1" deepwell socket to take it off wait til cool because transmission fluid will come out, screw in new one, wait 20 mins. and reattach positive battery cable (removing positive cable resets computer) should make lights go out and speedometer work if not then have to put it on a computer to have it reset.

2005 dodge dakota 6cyl- It will not shift into 3rd or 4th, if it does shift, it tends to down-shift itself so I'm doing 3000 rps @ 40mph - codes fr comp show speed sensor at rear axle problem????do I need ABS wheel sensor or trans speed sensor? Noticed this problem 1st when cruise was on & it kicked "off cruise" by itself.
