On my 1997 3.9, when I engage 4wd (either 4hi or 4low) the lite will come on indicating its in 4wd but after moving like 10 or 20 feet it will disengage and grind.
Any ideas guys ??

has the truck ever had a lift-kit? i had this problem with a earlier dak that had a lift kit in
it,the problem started out with the body raised,
the shifter hit the floor pan when it was in 2wd,
put it was really between 2wd-4wd,this caused a gear in the transfer to go bad making this grinding noise
this gear looked much like a front sprocket on a bike,
this may or may not be your problem,but maybe it will help

soak the linkage and shifter with good oil not
WD40
a squirt can works good under truck
the lever and linkage get sticky and will not stay
in gear pops out
