Message:
hey guys,

I finally got around to swapping to a V8 Throttle body.
Here is my problem. The truck started right up. I let it idle for about 5 mins then i took it for about a 5 mile drive.

About 2 miles after I started driving, the check engine light came on. The truck runs great otherwise. I did have a bit of a sputter at one point when i had stoped then started accelerating again but otherwise no noticeable problems.

I know a few folks have had the Check engine light come on when they did the swap, but i never saw anyone post a fix or a reason for it. Can anyone help me out here?
Thanks for any/all help.

what yr TB did you install? maybe it's from an engine that had an EGR. i believe that could do it.

This site kind of sucks now that you can search any more. I posted the cure but don't know where it is. Try this site it's much better. If you can't do the work on the tb yourself let me know but this article should allow just about anyone to do it.

there was a post on here a while back that had a solution to this. it has something to do with a couple of slots that are on the bottom flange of the tb on the back. i think the EGR TB's have the slot and non-EGR tb's don't. if you still have your old tb look at the bottom mounting flange and compare it to the one you just bought.

N56629,

i checked out the link you posted and checked my V8 tb. Im not positive but i dont think its an EGR TB. This one doesnt have the tiny holes showed in the picture and neither does my old V6 one. Is there another way to decipher it?

also something i just thought to mention. ON the front of the TB. there is a hose. Im guessing its a vacume hose. It just slides on to the little port on the TB. Well its really dry rotted and looks like it could break at any time. It was quite difficult taking it off the first time without completely distroying it. Could this be a problem? I also had my MAP and TPS sensors replaced about a month ago....

Thanks again guys for all the input/help. I love this website because ive gotten so much help over the last few years.
Mac.

The little hose goes to your MAP and I would say, yes, that could be your problem if it is leaking. Essentially that is what is happening with the EGR type, the vacuum signal isn't as strong.

ya thats what im leaning towards. Ive taken the MAP sensor off and put it back on and when i started it back up it has a really high idle speed. I let it Idle like that for about 5 mins...when i hit the gas it kicked down to normal idle and the Ck engine light came back on. Does this sound about right with the hose? Is it tough to get a new one?

Taking the sensor on and off shouldn't be the cause of the high idle. I would check with the dealer for the part first. The only other choices you have are to score some parts or complete tb for cheap or mount the MAP somewhere else and run some straight tubing.

I've never tried it but KRC suggests taking the vacuum source from somewhere other than the tb such as the manifold. This would also require mounting the sensor somewhere else, plugging the port on the tb and running some straight hose to the manifold.

Could it just be thet vacume line next to the MAP is bad? Would a vacume leak cause a Ck Engine light to come on? Where would i get one?

Thanks again for all your help,
Mac

I have had similar problems once I put on a V8 TB. I do not
believe that it was an EGR TB but have not taken it off to check
for sure, will when I get a chance. After a few miles I trip the
code 0455 for a major vacuum leak. The dealer said it was the
gas cap but I replaced it and the code still goes on.

The Vac lines all look OK and I replaced the bent piece to the
MAP sensor because I thought it might be that. The dealer had
to special order it but was only like 2$ I think.

Any other ideas??
Thanks

I figured out my problem a few days after I put it on..the actual MAP sensor (or was it the TPS..i cant remember now)...was on too tight.. i backed off the screws a hair and the code and issues went away...havnt had any issues since and that was about 30k Miles ago...

good luck
