i think there was a post about this a little while ago, but i couldnt find it. i have a 98 3.9 auto, and when i first put the truck in drive, or reverse, there is a horrbile buzzing kind of sound coming from the engine. this happens when i slow to a stop too, once i stop the noise is back. it goes away after i reach around 5-10 mph. could this be a PCV? any help would be great
thanks
Jeremy

Yeah Jeremy, I've got a '98 Dakota 4X4, auto. and I hear the same buzzing/ rattling coming out of the engine area also. Mine happens when I am in park and the engine is idling. I'm not too worried about it but sometimes I wonder what that is and if I should fix it.

Does it do it at idle? If you hear it then and not after you start to drive off it could be ur PCV. I asked the same question a while ago cuz I hadn't noticed it til I replaced some things. Probably can't here it after you drive off because the engine gets too loud.

Adam, it almost sounds like a loose piece of sheet metal. I recently replaced my PCV, and it does rattle, which is how you know it's working, but that is a different noise than the one I'm experiencing. My exhaust manifold shields are tight and are not rubbing on anything. I think my rattle may be coming from the tranny.

Sorry, I meant to say that the noise goes away when I am in park. The noise starts when the engine is idleing in the drive or reverse gear. As I begin to drive then the noise slowly goes away. It sounds like it should be the exhaust manifold shields, but it is not. Is that the same as yours, Jeremy?

Relf, yeah, that is pretty much exactly what mine sounds like. i dont know if i would call it the heat shield on the exhaust manifold though. but it dous sound like a buzz/rattle/grind kind of noise. i was thinking it could be in the tranny too. but i dont know for sure.

My truck does the same thing, try putting a wrench on the belt tensioner while the motor is off then start it up and get it to make it's noise, then put more tension on the belt, this would stop my rattling, but i put a new tensioner on it and it didn't fix it. Try it and see, I think it might be my belt.

Trevor, I put a new tensioner on a couple months ago. I would hate it if it was the tranny.

I put on a new tensioner too but that didn't fix it, try the wrench. That stops my trucks noise while there is extra tension on it.

I have a similar sound in my Ram. Narrowed it down to the muffler and catcon. I think there are baffles loose in the muffler, and the catcon could be shot. I have a heat sheild on the end of the tailpipe to protect teh spare, and at least once a year the tack welds on the sheild break and have to be rewelded. There must be some kind of vibration that is just at the wrong frequency and keeps tearing things apart. Try banging around with the palm of your hand and see if you can get the same noise. Make sure things are cooled down first.
