Subject: How much to change gears?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 and was wondering how much it would cost to change out my 3.55 gear to either 3.92 or 4.10 to increase the towing capabilities. Has anyone done this?

I would have a service shop do it.

Well if you plan on having a service shop do it, then try call your local service shops and ask them how much they are going to charge.

The range I've seen is anywhere from a couple hundred to about $400ish...and yours will be on the high end prolly because with it being 4x4 I think you have to change out both the front AND the rears.

yours will definately be on the high end. they will have to change both gear sets. if they dont, if you use 4wd on a hard surface, your front tires are not spinning the same speed as your rear tires. this can cause a lot of damage to your transfer case/tranny. you have to have your front end and rear end geared the exact same.

GET IN, SIT DOWN, SHUTUP, AND HOLD ON

I do have a 4x4. The $400 sound very reasonable to me. Does that include the gears themselves and labor? I definatly would do it then.

I'm honestly not sure...that very well could be parts alone. I've never done it (though I'm considering having it done eventually), so I really can't say.

Sorry I can't help you out more.

it is likely to cost you upwards of 1000. it will cost you over 100 for each ring gear plus the money for the shim kit for each axle and over 200 in labor on each axle more then likely, its going to cost alot.

Thanks for the info.
I'm thinking of buying a travel trailer that will weigh 3,000lbs. I think my QC 3.9L 4x4 with 3.55 gears has a towing rating of about 3,500 - 3,800lbs.

So I am within the tow ratings.

However, people tell me that the truck will be straining in the mountains out west.

So it may be worth the $1,000 to upgrade the gears.

i'd go with the gears. is that an auto? i've got an '00 QC 3.9 4x2 w/ 3.55's and 5spd manual. i don't think i'd want to haul 3k lbs through the mountains with it and i know my tow rating should be a little higher than yours.

I agree, you will have to change gears to pull in the mountains. Flat land is O.K., but never a big incline, you will be down to 1st gear in no time.

I had mine done along with a new LSD unit for $800 installed

I went from a 3.55 open rear to a 3.92 LSD

Its a lot of fun in the rain now!

I can also make those tight turns on a dime when need be.

daddio,
It is an auto. I think the auto's have a higher tow rating than the manuals. Go to the site below.

that chart shows my truck having a rating of 3,750. i don't see your combo even listed. it does show a QC 4x4 3.9 auto w/3.92 rated @ 4,650. a QC 4x4 w/ 3.9/ 5spd/(which is like mine but 4x4) 3.92 rated @ 3,450. did i miss something?

daddio,
Mine isn't listed for some reason. But I know I have 3.55gears - it says so in the glove box.

Auto transmission has about a 400lbs advantage over the manaual

well, anyway if you go with the 3.92's you'll have that 4,650 rating which should be good. your probably looking at 1,000 to get it done. while your at it put in an aux tranny cooler. your truck will love you for it.

I went from 3.55s to 4.10s in my QC.
Im very glad i did but part of me wonders now if i should have went with the 4.56s...
My trannys happy i went to 4.10s also(it stopped going into shift nirvana on the 2nd to 3rd shift) my mpg improoved, but thats cause i couldnt use overdrive anywhere including the highway with the 3.55s.
The increase in the seat of the pants feel is very nice. I can goose it in 4x4H down a dry grassy field and spin them while going sideways up to 45 mph. (thats the speed it registers when the tires catch LOL) For towing i wont ever go back to anything less then 4.10s again.

I did a complete axle rebuild on mine so it was around 800 for the rear(thats all this shop does) Then front i took to another shop (a couple weeks later) that raped me and charged me an insaine price for oil that ended up being 900 for the front. Then the turds that did my front end tightened my rear brakes so by the time i got home they were fryed.

Still even after all that i say it was well worth it.

What size tires are you running? That's one important thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread. If you can't get into overdrive with a stock setup there's some problems going on. I'm sure that's not the case. What I am saying is, that it's all interrelated. Tire size will effect gearing, which will effect towing capacity among other things. We need to know a little more of the whole story, espically when things start getting changed up.

I just reciently found this site, and it seems there's a lot of good helpfull people on here so I'm sure I'll be back. I also just got a '93 dakota sport V6 5speed standard cab and bed and so far it's a great truck.

Sorry found my old post again so ill reply just in case.

Its a 2002 3.9 v6 QC with 1.7 RR, 180 stat, ported tb, modified intake manifold, home brew air hat, home brew intake with a huge diesel airfilter on it, then just dialed everything in like the fuel sync(messed with this one for a day until i found a sweet spot) and set the cam up 2 degrees advanced.

My truck has the big mud bogger 31s on it so when going to 4.10s it still was very highway friendly.
With the 3.55s a head wind would knock it out of OD on a straight stretch at 75 mph so i didnt use overdrive cause its not good for the tranny to shift often especially on the hilly roads i have to take.

Dex,
I plan to do the same change myself and one shop quoted me at $800-1000 including parts and labor (both gears). The gears themselves will cost ~$400. 4-6 hours labor will jack it up another $600.

That seems like a reasonable price.
Where do you live? I'm in Smyrna, Ga.
If you are close by I'd like to know the shop name and address.

Remind them to put in synthic fluids.
