alright, I looked back about a mouth and didnt find anything on rebuilds. unles Im retarded

Anyway, I have a 3.9 on a stand that I picked up for $100 and need to rebuild it. I know nothing about this motor as far as mileage or any problems that it might have.

My questions are...

What tools would be necessary?

What should be replaced?

What kinda things should I do to get it to perform better?

and where/who is the best supplier for the price and quality?

It should be taken to a reputable machine shop to have the cylinders bored and honed to eliminate any scoring that mat have happened during normal wear and tear. After the boring and honing, put in a good set of oversized pistons and rings to compensate for the boring and honing. Magnaflux the heads and rods to find out where (if any) cracks exist. It should have the main bearings replaced, and I would recommend replacing the cam bearings also. Go over everything with a micrometer and compare specs to a factory service manual, and replace broken or out of spec parts. Also, put new lifters, pushrods, and rocker arms in it. Get a machine shop to do a 3-angle valve job for you and replace the guides and seals. For performance, hit up Comp Cams or Crane and get a nice big cam for it. Put a new oil pump and pickup in it too.

if you've got the money, stroke it. as it's been said " there's no replacement for displacement". what would be more fun than ripping some v8's a new one with a lil' ole sixer.

What would be easier/smarter...stroker or supercharger? I kinda want to get a v8 for mine but now I'm leaning against it but I want more power, so I was thinking somewhere along the road I would do either of the two.

My questions are...

What tools would be necessary?
This pretty much depends on what you want to do in house and what you would need to have done at the local machine shop. The more the merrier is a pretty good start. I would suggest have a well stocked tool chest to handle an engine rebuild.

What should be replaced?
Without a history or background on this motor, you are going to have to check out about everything. The crank to the top must be gone through. I would plan on replacing allot of the items while in the process. I am not saying you have to, but better safe then sorry when you dont know the previous miles or wear factors on the engine.

What kinda things should I do to get it to perform better?
One simple question to answer this all, how much money do you want to spend. What items can you get to give you the most bank for the buck, take a peek at the tech articles at www.hughengines.com and read the V6 article on most bank for the buck. Bottom line, how much you have in your wallet, a supercharger is cool but they run over 4k.

and where/who is the best supplier for the price and quality?
I know I am going to get flamed on this one, but since it is a six and they are rather rough to find parts for; I would suggest looking at one of three primary vendors for goodies. SoCalDakota has a nice list of items. Additionally Hughes Engines totally rocks with everything from pistons to cold air intakes. Finally www.dakota-durango is another great source with a few references to places like krcperformance and a couple others.
I used hughes for the variety of parts and the support from Kevin and Dave on my rebuild, take a gander at the various posts in the dodgekatos boards as well.

what about supercharged and stroked together. that seems like it would be an interesting combo.

GET IN, SIT DOWN, SHUTUP, AND HOLD ON
