Subject: did the Deathflash correction

When I bought my 00 CC v6, i remarked that it pulled OK when I test drove it. Somewhere along the line, I think during an axle bolt recall, the dealer got me with the deathflash. The truck was a dog after that. It really PO'd me when pulling my boat, the thing had no balls. I tried a Jet chip, but the improvement was small or psychological, so I yanked it. Today I did the deathflash correction described on krcperformance website. It was a b!tch to do. One of the bolts holding the crankshaft position sensor is practically inaccessibile and up against a rib cast into the block so a box wrench won't go on. Fortunately, there is 1/4 allen sockets in the bolt heads. I had to shorten an allen wrench by cutting the long end to get it up and in there. The wires coming off the CPS seem to disappear to nowhere, but they end up underneath the distributor. Tough to work in here, too, but I got it unplugged.

The CPS bracket is plastic with brass inserts for the bolts, so slotting is easier said than done. I cut out the inserts so they look like C's and removed some surrounding plastic so I could slide the bracket like it says in the instructions. During this, the insert fell out of one side (no longer enough plastic to hold it in place), so I had to epoxy it back together. I reassembled the whole thing and slid the CPS until it hit the bellhousing. The truck started right up and I took for a test drive.

the performance gain was very noticable, maybe you'd consider it amazing. I have the 5sp, and got the tires to spin when I stomped it in 2hd gear (road was dry, tires a little wet, it just stopped raining).

this was well worth doing. the instructions on KRC say 1 hour job, maybe on an engine stand, but no way on a 00 V6 5 spd. Took me about 3 to figure it out, make the tool, find the connector, etc.

I look forward to more power pulling my boat, and more mpg when I'm not (if I can keep my boot out of the throttle...)

good luck if you try it

Also known as the CPS mod...and actually pretty easy to do if you go about it a different way.

http://www.blackshireserver.net/OhioDakotas/docs/Crankshaft%20Position%20Sensor.doc
That's the how-to I made after I did that mod...I realize you don't need it now, but it describes the way I went about it and had I not run out of daylight, it would have been probably a 1-2 hr. job. Instead it took about 3 because we had to finish using flashlights to see what we were doing.

I also found that it was easier to just buy a new crankshaft position sensor (metal one), rather than try and mess with my stock one...I like to keep my stock parts so if I screw up my truck isn't undriveable. lol

I agree with gb2000. I spent more time going to several parts stores to get the plastic fastners for the splash shield than I did doing the actual mod to the cps. I did the mod over a year ago with nothing but good results.

wish I knew about the easy way - but its all done now.

Any trouble with rain/snow/water, etc. getting in the bellhousing since you have to run without the rubber grommet?

I've yet to have any problems...only time I could see it really being an issue may be if you do a lot of off-roading through creeks and stuff.

How much HP does this mod give you? What are the possible drawbacks of doing it? How does it affect gas MPG?

no technical data available (by me) to provide a HP increase measurement. Big improvment in the seat-of-the-pants dyno. Haven't measured MPG yet as I only did the mod a couple of days ago (someone one else may have more info)

drawback could be preignition due to timing advance, but you could fix with higher octane fuel. Same issues as with a Jet ot Super chip

I didn't notice a huge difference honestly...but that's not to say there was no difference. Could just be the way my truck took to it. It's a good idea to switch to a 180*F thermo when you do this mod as well...prevents pinging (cheaper than switching to a higher octane fuel...especially these days!). Although some people have noticed a slight decrease in gas mileage when they switched to a 180*F thermo.

Is there a way you can tell the dealer did this Deathflash thing? I just bought my truck and it went into the dealer sometime in march for the balljoint recall. Its an 2001 Dakota 3.9 I noticed on the computer under the hood it had a sticker on it with something about an update, Im not sure if that has anything to do with it but i figured I would mention it. Thanks

Got it all done. Didnt take to long following the directions GB2000 gave. Made a difference, not sure exactly how much but as I drive it I will be able to tell. I have another question that I dont know if it is related to this mod or not. I have a 5sp and if i dog the engine a little bit I hear a little rattle. Before I did this mod from time to time I would hear a little clunk if i push the clutch in with a little bit of torque on it, if that makes any sense, or if i start out real slow in the RPMs it will rattle a lil. Is this normal or am I missing something. The only time i noticed it driving was after i did the crank mod, but i was being a lil ruffer on it then i normally do. Any help would be nice.

Make sure that rattle isn't pinging...that's a common effect of the CPS mod due to it increasing the timing quite a bit. If it is, you should switch to cooler plugs and possibly a 180*F thermo. If it IS just a rattle...no clue what it could be. Something may be loose...heat shield or something maybe?

Sounds like she's knocking - you can't dog it that much now with the extra advance or you'll be doing some damage.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Thanks for the info everyone. Yea she was knocking. After I did that mod I figured I should drive it everyway possible dog it, rev it and so fourth to see if it was gonna do. For the time being I put the sensor back to stock untill I get the plugs and the t-stat. When I had that inner fender off I found that I was missing a nut on my exhuast manifold so I am very glad I did that regardless. Whats the deal with 3 cats and 4 O2 sensors...geeze. Thanks again

So I have 98 cc with 3.9, should I try this cps mod? A deal hasn't had their hands on it since at least april 2001, but it sound like it might be a good idea anyway. I have a new t-stat (180) already, I just need to take time to do that. Thanks guys.
