hey larry. looking to possibly drop in a new cam when i do my timing chain/tensioner on my '02 3.9 auto, current engine mods:

k&n intake, fastman tb, iat relocate, crank sensor advance, injector sync, 180 tstat, 1.7HS rrs, hi flow cat & muffler, 4.10s & powertrax locker.

i'm looking into the hughes HER0814AL cam. their site describes it as "Step up from factory R/T camshaft, more power, wider power band. Computer change required for 5.2L V8. Stage I billet throttle body."

i'll be putting in my modded intake manifold then (trimmed runners 1", filled some plenum area, gasket matched ports), and plan on getting the required beefier springs and pushrods to still run my 1.7rrs. my truck is a daily driver, no towing.

my question is, would this cam work well for my application, with stock heads, pcm and fuel system? what kind of rear wheel hp gain could i honestly expect from this cam and setup? your thoughts, thanks.

ya know, i've honestly never done an actual 0-60 time or 1/4 in my truck. its an 02, club cab, 2wd, with 18s and about a 28.5 tire. it gets along quite well, but now i'm thinking i need to get out to the little abandoned stretch of freeway offramp a few miles out of town, where all the streetracing goes down, and try and log some rough 0-60times.

the powertrax is great. this'll be my third winter on it, and with a 2wd, its a blessing compared to open end. for winter months i run nitto terra grappler all terrains, since i snowboard, and live in the northwest. last year on opening day at the local resort, i was following a new cherrokee awd up the hill, and he spun out gassin around a corner. i make it up no sweat.

daily driving on dry stuff, you can tell the powertrax is there, when rounding a corner and giving a little gas or hitting 2nd gear (thank you transgo) it'll lock and unlock, and chirp the inside tire. kinda takes a little getting used to, but it really isnt all that bad. i can swing around in parking lots and stuff just fine, cuz when you're slowed down and make a turn, it unlocks and its like having an open end.

a little noise now and then, sometimes it kinda surpries ya, but its normal stuff. gotta be careful in the rain/slick/snow rounding corners, or even going straight. when you accelerate, both tires are spinning at the same rate, and the back end will want to swing one way or the other, but its very predictable. and when you know how it'll react, quite fun.

the 4.10s helped out the most on highway driving (our freeways in ID are 75) with 3.55s i couldnt keep up at that speed, and would constantly have to drop out of OD. now i can cruise 75-80 (2300-2500rpm) and never downshift up a hill. did a 2000 mile trip this summer and got between 20-23mpg in southern ca, and it was about 100 outside.

considering forgetting the new cam, adding in the modded intake manifold, double roller timing set, degreeing in my stock cam, and saving up for a remote turbo setup, sts style.

for those that havent seen it -- http://dakotausa.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?p=309922#post309922

going back and forth between heads/cam and that turbo setup. i'd love to do the turbo. like ive got the money for either...

hmmm, that is very cool i need to look into that powertrax

so you would recomend me get 4.10 instead of 3.92?

now what is that double roller timing set??

thanks

quite easy to install too. just read the instructions VERY carefully, it's quite specific about how to line everything up, all the little teeth and stuff. but it really only goes together one way.

are you automatic or 5speed? auto for sure i would recommend 4.10.

double roller timing set = beefier timing chain & hardened sprockets. need to replace my stock one and get the tensioner in there, mine's noisy.

great picture of a double roller timing chain & tensioner installed, looking at front of motor.

not to burst you bubble on the sts turbo but unless they finally got around to making a kit for the dakotas when I looked into one last year they told me I would have to by their generic kit then have to either take my truck to them or some place that could bend the tubing because they hadn't made one for the dakotas. would be a good mod if you are willing to drop about 5 grand for the kit and the added shop work. you can get a supercharger for that kind of money.

did you check that link in my earlier post? it showed a guy who built a remote turbo himself. his was a little mild, i've got my own tweaks i'd add to it, but i believe he started out with a sts generic kit. it could be done diy for way less than 5grand, and make much better power than any of the blowers available for the v6...

Because of the 512 520 lift this cam has

1 You will have to run a stock ratio 1.6 rocker

2 You will also have to change the springs the
stock springs will bind over .500 lift

The comp will run this cam but you have a few
options there super chips tunner or a flash from
KRC

You should also use a 46mm fastman or a 48mm F&B
this will give you the full gain from the cam
around 30 RWHP

alright, thanks larry. i think i'm just gonna stick with my 1.7rrs, get a good double roller chain & tensioner, & put in my modded manifold, and forget about the cam for now.

another question for ya larry. gonna get the Progear 4000 timing set from Hughes to replace my stocker. their crank sprockets have all the timing marks in 2* increments +/-. so when i install these, and degree in the stock cam, i won't need any offset keys/bushings, correct?

and once ive found the centerline and whatnot (via your how-to), how do i align the sprockets to advance a little if need be? do you just rotate the crank gear until the x* advance dot is lined up at 12 oclock with the cam? has 2* advance been what works best for the stock cam?
