Subject: Possible bad injector?
IP: Logged

Message:
How do you test your injectors to see if they are operating properly, or how do you determin which one is defective? Here is my problem. I have a 95 3.9L it idles rough and no power. I change the wires and plugs a while back. I recently replaced the plugs again and a couple of them look like they just came out of the box while the others had a grey ash on them. That tells me I'm either not getting fire or fuel to those plugs. The wires and plugs did not help the problem so I'm leaning towards a bad injector but I don't want to replace them if they are not bad. Thanks for any help or advice.

you can use an ohmmeter to test the inhectors. disconect the wires, and out the meter across the two terminals. i dont know the spec ohm they are supposed to be, but if you have like 4 that are all cose to the same, and 2 that are way out there, the two are probably the bad ones. i hope that helps.

I went through all that stuff, I replaced everything and it turned out to be an injector I couldn't get over 50 mph and it took for ever to get there. When I have a problem now I take to someone with a computer and see what is wrong, it costs to much money to guess.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond but Rita ripped us a good one here in east Texas. We were without power for four days. I don't rely on others to work on my vehicles because I am such a perfectionist, besides no one around here seems to know to much about what they are doing. I think I will do what Jeremy said about checking the ohms on the injectors. Does anyone know what the specs are? That is at least a good starting point on determining if I do have a bad injector. Thanks

Thanks, that will give me a good starting point. Is there a way to check the flow of the injector to know that it is letting the gas through? Thanks

Not unless you pull the injectors and attach them to another fluid pressure source(or to the fuel rail...which is NOT a good idea), send a pulse through them and watch the flow.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Hate to bust in on your thread, hope you don't mind.

I have been having an intermittent problem like this for a while. My buddy loaned me an indicator light that I could hook to the wire to see if the injector was being told to fire. When it started running rough, I hooked up the indicator and no light. I pulled off another wire and the indicator actually works when it gets a signal.

I have had it in the shop 3 times, it works fine every time I take it in, driving me nuts. I don't know how to tell if it is in the wiring or in the computer and don't want to just start replacing things. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't mind at all. Is the engine hot or cold when this happens? The injectors get their signal from the ASD relay and the PCM(trigger/pulse). If the engine is hot when this happens it "might" be the PCM,(probably not the ASD due to it would affect them ALL)or if it happens erratically, it might be the connections AT the PCM or the injector, OR the wires between.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Thanks for your reply. It can happen at any time. It can be running along great and then act like this for a while, then run just fine. On one of my days off, I noticed it had started acting up, I drove in to the dealer, they hung a computer on it and drove it around for 20 miles, and it didn't do it once. It will quit for months and then start again. I wiggled the wires to the injector while it was doing bad to see if it would respond, no change, I cleaned out the connection to the computer and that didn't seem to have any effect.

It was running kind of poorly for a while recently, then it rained for 2 days and it has been fine today.

If I could get it to misbehave while it was hooked up, I could tell if it was the computer. Is there any way to check the wires?

What is an asd relay, anyway, and is it hard to change, expensive? I may have already changed it.

ASD Automatic shutdown relay, located in the fuses box under the hood. When you hooked up the indicator/tester light to the injector or injectors(the time you said it was acting up)did you get an indication that the injector was receiving the pulse signal from the PCM? If you got an indication that the injectors were receiving their pulse, AND you check the resistances like I stated above, it might just be your cap or rotor being corroded or carbon tracked. Have you changed either lately? You could also check the notorious splice by the power dist box for corrosion.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

When I hooked up the indicator, I hooked it up to the wire that goes to the injector. I had to take it loose from the injector and then the light/indicator goes in the place of the injector. It did not light, indicating, to me, that it was not getting the signal, through the wire, from the computer.

As it is so intermittent, I haven't been able to get it to the shop when it is happening, so I don't know if it is in the wiring, the connection, or in the computer. I cleaned the connection and put in some kind of contact grease, and tightened it back down, no help. The idea of changing the wiring looks a bit daunting to me and I don't want to just up and buy a new computer.

I finally got it to a shop while it was messing up.

It was the computer. Replaced it and I am gad to report that it is running as well as ever.
