Message:
Ok here my deal I've got a 98 dak my cousin bought my old 88 dak from me a year ago and he blew up the trans about a week ago. Its got a jasper rebuilt engine in it that he is letting me have. I want to build the engine the he i giving me for my 98. My question it what are the differences in the engine besides the top end of the engine. Will the accorites bolt to the 88 block like water pump and all the serpintine belt accories.

thanks,
Aaron

As far as I know, the answer is yes, although the cylinder heads on the Magnum are different. I don't know if that will affect your options for intake manifold. The 3.9 lower end has been pretty much the same since '87 when it was released in the dakota. As far as I know, all the accesories are the same, but I would double check on that water pump- an alarm bell is ringing in my head because it might have been revised to a higher-volume cooling system. Not positive there though. Everything else should be about the same.

At least that's what I remember from working on an '88 once before- it was a while ago so I might be wrong.

Hey, I have a set of pre mag head and a cam and lifter set for sale if you are interested in them. they were all bought new and only have maybe 4000kms on them, before the bottom end of my engine went so i just took the off and put a different engine in. But anyways I am pretty sure they would work on an 88. I can get you a casting number if you want to check. let me know my email is bigmlb@gmail.com

its alot different. magnum heads will not bolt to a pre-mag 3.9 and vice versa. therefore the intakes are not interchangeable. you would have to convert your whole truck to tbi if you wanted that. the old 3.9's were as reliable as the new ones if not more, but the had less balls. not worth it. build up the magnum if anything. mounts are different too. the only thing that has always remained the same was the lower end of the engine. the block is the same and everything inside it is too. minus a few differences made when they came out with magnums like i said before about the heads and mounts.

Would that be a different head bolt pattern, or just different diameter bolts? Because with studs, I'm sure you can get something to work from ARP or someone like that. If it's a different pattern then you can really forget it. I've never had a 3.9 really far apart, but I know accesories are similar...

the bolt holes in the blocks are in different spots. why would you want to swap out the engines anyways? makes no sence. thats downgrading.

hmmm, different pattern. I think that he means to "built" as in radically modify the block he can get his hands on for cheap or nothing. It would make sense if the mag heads and intake were good to go. I don't know about performance support for the 3.9. Obviously there's plenty of tuners, cold air kits, and exhausts available, but I'm not sure about the deal with the "hard parts", ie aftermarket cams, valves, porting the heads, pistons, etc. Obvously some of those components are shared with the 318, but I never really considered making a 3.9 into a street rod. It would probalby be more trouble than it's actually worth. the reason to build a 3.9 would be to have something different from the next guy. Different usually also means more expensive though...
