O.K. here is an intresting little problem. Recently, my 3.9 auto has developed a peculuar quirk. Everytime I hit a pothole, the RPM's will increase 300 or more. The problem is multiplied when I have my ATV loaded. Then it will just chug slowing down, while experiencing the same jump in RPM's. In the past week it has gotten worse so now even during normal driving the RPM's will jump with no warning. It sounds like someone is letting the clutch out on a manual. It occurs in every gear. I took it to the dealer who patted me on the head, said it was just low on fluid and kicked me out a couple of dollars poorer. It is still occuring and I am getting pretty angry. This is my second Dodge Dakota, and the second one that has had some kind of major failure in the transmission before 75,000 miles. I am seriously considering purchasing another brand (probably a Ford) after this one.

It could be the TPS(throttle position sensor).

On my '99 Dak V6 auto the rpm's would suddenly rise 200-300 for no reason. On mine it would only do it while in O.D. going 55-75mph.

Search "TPS" or "throttle position sensor" and you'll find alot more info.....TPS is my guess!

Darryl

P.S.

Don't but the TPS from a Dodge dealer, they want $75 for it. Go to NAPA or Autozone for about $35.

Yes Darryl, but it is happening more often the more load it is carrying. It sounds like slippage in the transmission, probably not enough material left in the planet clutches, or not enough pressure to keep the bands and clutches engaged. Most people don't think to service the transmission until it starts acting up, at which point it is too late. I have serviced the transmission on my Dakota every year since I bought it (new filter, complete flush), and have had no problems with it. I now have 158K on the original trans, and still no problems. And don't backflush the transmission, that does not clean the filter. Pull the pan, put a new filter and gasket on, then flush the fluid through the cooler return line.

Well, that makes sense too. I service the transmission at the factory recomended intervals. I just had it flushed, new filter, and inspected less than 3,000 miles ago. The truck is still under warenty, so I guess I will have to go back to the dealer. I will be going to a different dealer since the last dealer treated me like, well, a dumb @ss.

I have had a great week with my new Dodge, well new to me. Just bought it and no less then 30 days later I was driving along, with no warning signs a large LOUD noice and my transmission is in two peices(actually seared in half) unversal is shatterd, transfer case shaft is bent and I am sitting on the side of the road swearing up a storm. With no warning signs and 92K on the tranny any ideas why my dream just became a nightmare. Mind you I had checked all fluids and maintained there levels since getting.

Dean, man that really sucks. I don't know what could've caused such a catastrophic failure. Let us know what happens with your dream!

isn't there a chain that connects the tranny to the transfer case? if that failed i think it could do that kind of damage. man, sorry to hear about that. i guess the lot you bought it off of didn't give something like a 30 warranty?

There is not a chain that connects the transfer case to the transmission. The transfer case mounts in place of the tailshaft on a 2WD transmission. The transfer case has a gear and chain drive that transmits power to the driveshafts.
Sounds like one hell of a failure. The catastrophic failure that occurs like that happens when there are extreme levels of heat, usually from low fluid level, or major blockage in the fluid lines. I know the radiator mounted cooler has a check valve in the return side that was part of a TSB from Dodge. They stated that it would stick closed, not allowing fluid to return to the transmission during high stress and heat levels. Maybe look at that as a possible failure.

one thing that people dont think about, is if you put other than "ATF PLUS" tranny fluid in it. i heard of serious failures with the wrong fluid.

I believe ATF+4 will not work in older (96 and down) trannies, because it will mess with the seals on them.

Well, 98purpledak, yea, that is how it started actually. I will try the PCV valve and see if it makes the difference. Did you have any problems when towing???? Because this problem also seems to be realated to stress or increased throttle pressure.

shake the PCV, if you can hear it rattle. then its good.

valveman, just shaking the PCV valve is not enough, try putting your finger over it with the engine running and pull your finger off fast, just another test to tell if it works. When in doubt, replace the PCV. It's so damn cheap that it should be replaced once a year.

Well, replaced the PCV valve, it is not the PCV valve. I am now at square one again. I looked at the trans-fluid and guess what, it looks brand new, so I don't think it is getting too hot, and it does not smell hot when it runs. I am now thinking it is related to the clutch.dclbigman15, how do you check the torque converter?
