How does your vehicle run when the fuel pump is going out...? Does it go all at once or does it gradually get worse...? I think mine took a crap and died. I went to start my truck this morning and it just kept turning over, not enough to start ya know? Finaly it did though, after about 30 min. It all started about a month ago, I would be driving down the road and the truck just cut's out. Kinda like it was the plugs and wires but, nope I've changed them along with alot of other parts ie: timing chain, cam gear, crank gear, throttle possesion sensor, radiator, dis. cap and rotor(2), plenum pan gasket, cleaned throttle body, new O2 sensor, 180 thermostst...

Your dak will start hard, run good for a little bit, stall, stutter, spit, then run good until the fuel pumps electric motor finally succumbs and goes to motor heaven/nirvana. Yor problem might also be the filter/sock or pressure regulator, but unfortunately they are all part of the same assembly. What year, cab, miles?

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

The actual first thing to go was my fuel sending unit. Then after few months (was in no hurry to change the sending unit) ...the truck would run fine until I got about 8 gallons of gas left (22 gallon tank). Then over the next few days, it started to stall and miss at any level of fuel left.

It is a 92 dak w/ a 3.9 liter, regular cab, long wheel base, 2 wheel drive, 5 speed man., w/ 118,000 miles on it... A while back when I changed my timing chain and gears it kinda acted the same, it like I said kinda misses. I know the timing chain was causing it to back fire and jump time, it also started cutting out about the same time... I checked the fuel pressure w/ a tester around the same time that I did all the other work and it was like 20 psi or some thing like that, when it started running rough it would compensate and add more fuel. Is there any way to really tell for sure what it is, it isn't throughing on the check engine light though. By the way, it has a check engine light and maint. required light as well, what is the diff.?

Just for joke try and check all your grounds. My dak was dieing randomly, my tach would jump around, my light flicked like a candle. All ended up to be a lose ground on the manafold. So check all ground wire because that will cause major problems.

Happy truckin

Hmmm, my '04 doesn't seem to have a maintainance required light, or else I just haven't discovered it yet. I can say from dealing with other cars it's most likely that the maintainence required light uses some kind of forumula to let you know when you need to change the oil. Different makes do it different ways- some can analyze the duty cycle of the engine and determine that you need to change it more often if you beat the crap out of your truck. Given the age of your truck it's more likely that it simply comes on at whatever recommended mileage Chrysler recommends and probably has a simple reset procedure in your owner's manual. Check engine can denote a lot of different problems- emissions control problem, tranmission issues on some cars, climate control problems, and mechanical issues such as a random misfire or excessive knocking. Again, given the age of your truck, some of these functions probably arent covered (ie. the tranny in your truck probaly isn't electronically controlled, neither is the climate control system).

Just as a brief tip- you might check the aftermarket for filter socks- I am pretty sure that NAPA sells them for a truck of that age. Newer dakotas may have integrated socks, but I I can't confirm that having never had one apart.
