Subject: cat conv on 04 3.7 dakota?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,
I am new here and have a question? I am looking at buying an 04 Dakota 3.7L SXT. It only has 29,000 miles on it and seems to be in great shape. My only concern is that the cat-converter has been removed and I didnt see any 02 censors. The check engine light is not on (I dont know how that could be). where should the censors be ? How could this thing be running so good without a cat? Should I be leary of this truck?
Thanks,
anything is very helpful.

Well, it violates federal law to remove a catcon, so I'd make the buyer install one, so you don't have to later. If you have emissions inspection it will be caught; if not, it's still illegal and may cost you later to replace it.

Yeah, they can still run OK without one; but they will pump out 10 times the raw gasoline that a vehicle equipped with one does.

I'm not familiar with that engine, since my vehicles are both 1992, but generally, O2 sensors screw into the exhaust manifold(s), and in newer vehicles like yours, also downstream of the catalytic converters in the exhaust pipe(s). They look like spark plugs with wiring harnesses running from them.
