in doing research on oxygen sensors in the past, I've seen some sites that mention that you can try cleaning them. I do not have any of these sites bookmarked here at the office. I may not have them at home anymore, i have had to rebuild pc at home.

I would suggest doing a google search. I have not tired any method of cleaning. One site as I recall even mentioned that the process could damage a good sensor but in most cases the sensor was "probably" bad anyway and it was worth the time to try to clean instead of just buying a new one.

If you find a way and try it, I would be interested in knowing if it worked or not.

The only way that i know of was to take a torch and heat them up until most of the carbon on them was burnt off.

Atleast thats what i did to refresh or limp a bad one along.

yea i though about heating it up with a torch but didn't know if it would destroy it or not. i'll try it, can't hurt it if it's junk i guess.

Just keep in mind that the o2 sensors are coated internally with platinum, and as the sensors age(heat a big contributor) the chemical make-up(oxides) changes and that is why they need to be changed. Cleaning them off with them off with alcohol/acetone/xylene/heat will remove the excess carbon deposits and give you a few hundred extra miles, but it doesn't change the make-up back to new. Your best bet is to buy new ones... unfortunately

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

just exactly how do they work? do they create a electrical resistance or something like that? i'm new to all this computer stuff on vehicles, i've owned non computer vehicles until lately and i'm learning how they work before i mess with things and really screw em up good.

Yes, exactly, they create a resistance/amperage between the electrodes...the closest thing that I can think of that they are similiar to is a police breathalyzer.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Actually, they don't create a resistance (ohms). They give off a voltage reading (usually between 1-600 millivolts).

Actually, in order to create a voltage drop, there must be a resistance developed between the electrodes. Voltage is the potential between 2 points.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

True, if one sites ohms law, however, voltage output MV to ground is what the computer monitors.

My question is, do you change out both front and rear sensors around 80K or just the primary?

They recommend both be changed at 100k, but the forward(primary) is the only one that has anything to do with fuel/air ratio, so I geuss if you wanted to put off spending money on both, you would want change the forward sensor and leave the after sensor for later.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
