Subject: inj. sync causing pinging?
IP: Logged

Message:
I did the injector sync, now I'm getting a little pinging, only when I'm in park and I rev the engine. I can't hear it when I'm driving but I'm not sure if it's doing it then. It doesn't always do it, that's why I'm confused, it comes and goes. It usually does it when the engine isn't warmed up yet. I also have a superchips tuner, but it's set all the way down to 89 octane performance, the two higher settings were giving me pinging even with 93 octane gas. Seems like I have an engine prone to pinging. When I did the injector sync, the rotor was already right on the line, and I set it to a little less than 1/2" ahead. Can this cause pinging or should I look at something else?

Moe, it sounds like it might be set too far ahead. From
what I've heard it should only be set the width of the
rotor ahead, which I would think would be a 1/4 inch or
so.

1/2 inch is a huge move.

I've been stepping back the distributor a little at a time, now it's almost back to the point it was at before I did the mod, and I still get very slight pinging, I think. The only time I hear it is that first rev when I start the engine and the first couple of times I rev it, then it goes away, until next time I start the engine cold. It almost sounds like water splashing around the engine compartment. I don't get why it would only happen when the engine is cool, I thought most people experienced pinging when the engine is hot.
1. Can this be something else that I'm hearing?
2. If it is pinging, should I worry about such a small amount?

You sure you are not hearing a lose timing chain. What year and how many miles?

Nah, it's a 2000 with 40k, I don't think it's the chain. I'm gonna set the dist. back to the line today and see if it clears it up. Could it be that since I have a Superchips installed, I'm doubling the effect of it with the inj. sync mod?

moving the dist will not affect timing. try 1 range colder plug. if that doesn't work try a 180 t stat. or it could be the infamous "belly pan gasket". i believe when the engine is cold the pcm will call for more timing that could be why it does it cold. bosch reg plat plugs, 1 range colder than stock, got rid of a slight ping i had in my '00 QC 3.9. you could also try running some Seafoam through the TB to clean any carbon out of the combustion chambers. carbon build up will make them hold more heat and be more likely to ping.

Right now I'm running autolite 3923's. I moved the distributor back to stock location today, and the pinging is completely gone. I don't know if it makes sense or not. I get the impression that doing this mod shouldn't cause pinging. All I know is I started the engine cold tonight, reved it a few times, and not one little ping. I do feel the loss in power which sucks, but I'll look into that seafoam and try the mod again. My truck only has 40k, but the first 20k or so was living by the water. Maybe the salty air can cause buildup faster in the engine.

I would have removed the superchips first. That's most likely cause of pining not the injector sync. You didn't say what mode you are running the superchips in.

Btw, don't confuse the injector timing with ignition timing.

I have the superchips on the lowest setting (89 octane) and I always run 93 in my truck. The two higher settings gave me pinging. I could never figure that out, but I just lived with keeping it on the 89 setting with no pinging and tried to forget about how much I spent on it. Pinging didn't start up again until I moved the distributor. How can I check the belly pan gasket, is this the same as the oil pan?
