Subject: Stethoscope for rattling timing chain
IP: Logged

Message:
97, CC, 3.9L 90K miles. I have one of those
stethoscopes that have a long metal rod attached to
end to locate noises, but I have been having a hard
time locating the rattling/knocking that I've been
hearing. The only place that I have been able to locate
the noise with the stethoscope is between the harmonic
balancer and the oil pan, which I believe is the timing
cover. Does anyone know that they have a bad timing
chain that can try this out or has anyone noticed this
before? What other bad things could cause this rattle/
knock in this particular place? Thanks for any input.

It's very common for the timing chains to be loose on the V6 Dakotas...about the only way to fix it is to install a double roller chain (Cloyes I believe is the popular brand) and a tensioner.

Paul, did you have a rough idle before, or notice
anything else that the new chain fixed?

Yes I had a rough idle and still it's rough . I just replaced my throttle body with one from a 94 5.2 it was a straight over swap only have 20 mi since the install can't wait till the comp adjust to all the new air . Oh iv'e been told be a Dodge shop that the 3.9s are inherent for rough idle that is one of the reasons for the 3.7 .
