Subject: Stethoscope for rattling timing chain
IP: Logged

Message:
97, CC, 3.9L 90K miles. I have one of those
stethoscopes that have a long metal rod attached to
end to locate noises, but I have been having a hard
time locating the rattling/knocking that I've been
hearing. The only place that I have been able to locate
the noise with the stethoscope is between the harmonic
balancer and the oil pan, which I believe is the timing
cover. Does anyone know that they have a bad timing
chain that can try this out or has anyone noticed this
before? What other bad things could cause this rattle/
knock in this particular place? Thanks for any input.

I thought you were never supposed to turn the crank counter-clockwise.

Ummmm. You need to get the gears and chain replaced ASAP. On my '97 that noise started. The dealer said it was just the "tensioner" so I figured noisy but no big deal. (BS -it was the cam gear) The wife drove it home one day and the vehicle just stopped in the driveway. The cam gear was stripped. The position sensors kept the engine from actually running, but it could still turn over via the starter motor. She kept turning it over, trying to restart the truck. The valve train it seems is an incidence type soooooo, the valves, now out of time because of the slipped timing chain, hit the rising pistons and bent every rod and valve in the engine. The best price repair was $1100. A rebuilt was quoted at almost $3000, and a junk yard bolt in mystery engine was about $2000 installed. Those were non-dealer prices, the stealer quotes were worse... much worse. A new gear and chain set is CHEAP by comparison.

a loose timing chain is a very common problem on this engine.

Ummm, our engines are non-interference type, which means the chain could break and nothing would happen to the valves or pistons. Either you're BSing or you got taken for a fool over at the dealership.

Ummmmm. Two different estimates from two different INDEPENDANT shops with the same sordid tale of the cause. The stealer made three. I also have the stripped cam gear and the bent rods and valves. Perhaps the rods and valves simply bent themselves cause they felt like it? So I don't know who you are, perhaps you are the worlds master mechanic, or the fount of all knowledge, or the wizard of OZ.. I really don't care. But I believe them over you. In any case, the gear and chain caused it. I again advise the man to get it fixed. Oh, and I don't BS pal.

Take a look around these forums. The same things happened to other people when the timeing chain slipped.
