I have a 97, 3.9L, CC and I have been having problem
lately with my PCV valve rattling like crazy. It's so bad
that when I open the hood, I can't track down any other
noises because it is so loud. It normally does it all of
the time, I noticed that the v8 pcv valve looked like the
metal weight on the inside was a little heavier, so I put
that one in there and it doesn't really rattle at all, except
right when it revs up. I looked down the throttle body
and noticed that the PCV is allowing quite a bit of oil. I
just changed out the belly pan gasket and added an
aluminum belly pan and cleaned out the whole intake
so I don't want that all going to waste. Will the v8 pcv
cause too much pressure to build up inside of the
crankcase? Let me know your thoughts, and sorry
about the extra long post. I'm not sure if this will change
anything, but I think my timing is off due to my rattling
timing chain, which could cause some vacuum
problems.

A vacuum leak might cause it to rattle. At idle vacuum holds it nearly closed against spring tension. If your vacumm is flucuating it will cause the valve to open and close.

The fact that the valve is rattling indicates that it is doing its job. The oil in the intake indicates that either you still have a plenum leak or excessive blowby. It is the job of the pvc system to suck that blowby into the intake manifold.

Do a compression test and make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks.

N56629, my idle jumps between 625 and 675. I know
that isn't much, but I'd expect the needle to stay
somewhat constant at idle. I'm hoping that replacing
the timing chain in a couple of weeks will fix that. I just
want to make sure that putting that different pcv valve
won't mess anything up.

zzark, thanks. Was it rattling all of the time or was it on
and off?

I bought a new valve and installed it.
It rattled all the time.
That's when I went back to the auto store and got the V8 valve.
