Subject: Speed Sensor, Shuddering, Bad MPG

My truck has had it rough lately,

replaced the speed sensor twice - once at 60000 and once and 145000 and the same problem always redevelopes - it bounces around on interstate sometimes causing the truck to buck when it spikes and it spikes to +100 sometimes while going slow and fast
blow head gasket (see below)
mystery sound, thought it was trans but actually was backfire through intake (see below)

145000 miles, blown head gasket
I fixed/preventative maintainance-
two rebuilt heads
180 thermostat
timing gear
all lifters
water pump
radiator flush
spark plugs/wires
distributor/rotor
air filter
serpentine belt
coil

147000 miles, developed a bad random knock/clank/pop. Ran Sea foam through it several times no luck. Shop diagonosed the transmission internal timing (not exact words but was the jist) was messed up. They found metal shavings in the fluid, it was leaking and they got a misfire code for cylinder six. I figured the tranny would be next after I put all that work into the engine. They gave the trans a good bill of health and $2500 later I had my truck. A week later the sound returned. After two days the same shop determined the sound was not the transmission but a backfire through the intake. They didn't fix it. I was POed but they ended up being nice and we settled the issue of the misdiagonoses but I still had this sound and horrible gas mileage. I remembered the cyl 6 misfire code.

I check the spark plug and cables with no luck. It would back fire when I gave it gas. I replaced the fuel injector on cyl 6 and BINGO! No more back fire through the intake.

Here is my problem, after all my repairs and additions, I still am getting worst gas mileage than before my blow head gasket. My speed sensor is going bad again and it idles rough and shudders slightly going up hills and I think it's all connected somehow!! HELP!

Does my truck have a vacuum advance on it?

Check codes again. Another possibility besides O2 sensor is that MAP sensor may have been fractured from the backfires. It's a wafer-thin silicon chip.

I'll check O2 and MAP, but these wouldn't influence the speed sensor would they?

If I get on the gas hard somethings it'll spike all the way to 120 even if I'm just going 5 mph.
On the interstate, if it bumps down out of OD, it'll spike causing the truck to buck (not fun going 70+mph).

And sometimes the cruise control will just keep going faster and faster.

Man, looking and all the things that have gone wrong, I'm starting to think my truck is possessed.

It almost sounds as iff the sensor wasn't installed correctly??? It sounds as iff the sensor pick-up is "rubbing" (bumps and jolts)

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Just bought a 92,5 speed,136000 miles, anyway its bucking at times while just driving ,and sometimes dies at a stop sign,In looking at the check engine flashes, two codes appear, one is 12(batterey disconnected in the past) understandable, and the other is 15(No distance input from sensor) or something like that, will the distance/speed sensor cause this problem, and is there any way to test it,Just replaced the 02 sensor today, but the exhaust pipe is really carboned up..plugs however look pristeen....
