Subject: Rear end noise?.......
IP: Logged

Message:
For the past year my '89 3.9 4WD has been making a noise in the rear that sounds like bad tires, but I don't think that is the problem. The sound is a whining sound that gets higher and lower pitched as I speed up and slow down. The transmission has been fine, so I don't think that is the problem.
It almost makes the same sound as when it is in 4wd, but it is not in 4WD.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

I just had mine checked out because of the same thing. It was the carrier bearing. Had it replaced and now it doesn't make a sound.

How many other people have you pissed off, making them think they are getting some help to their problem? Try growing up.

Have you tried changing the gear oil in your rear? If it is a limited-slip diff, make sure that you get the right oil w/ friction modifires. it worked for me, but it seems to need changing every 18 months.

I have never changed the rear-end oil. Just had it topped off at oil change time. Maybe I will try that.Thanks.
