Subject: wheel bearings?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 3.9 4WD Dak with close on 100K, and have been told by a reasonably knowledgeable friend or two that this problem could be my wheel bearings. However, I thought I'd consult some specialists. :-)
Here it is:
I recently (last two weeks) began getting a noise in the front right that I would best describe as either the sound of a rock in a rock tumbler, or maybe a cards-in-your-spokes kind of noise (TICKETY-TICKETY-TICKETY). It's not present at idle, but is noticeable almost as soon as I begin to move. It does not go away at higher speeds; it just...well, sounds faster. Turning does not seem to affect it. If this is indeed the wheel bearings, what is my best option? From what I have read here, it seems that to replace bearings, I'm replacing the entire hub assembly. Is this something that a non-mechanic-type can do with relative ease? From what I can determine, the part's not cheap, but not outrageous either. I'm just trying to avoid getting raped on labor.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Bad news. You're going to pay either way. Whether it's the hub or the labor. Here's how to tell if the wheel bearing is bad: Run the truck at highway speed, and try to smell for something, it almost smells like hot metal, if you can't, stop the truck, and feel the center of the wheel, if it's hot as hell, then it's either your caliper is sticking, or your wheel bearings are getting hot from no lubricant. If this is so, get ready to fork up some dough, either for a hub, or for someone to put it in. And it is not an easy job. It is time consuming, involves disconnecting the upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, brake lines, and caliper removal.

i have a 2001 dakota with 60k miles and my wheel bearing went bad.on passanger side sounded like a grinding noise. And yes the faster you go the louder the noise would get.the best way to check.jack up the truck and grab the tire and shake it top to bottom. On my truck the bearing came off the hub.so the tire was loose.

The Best way to check a wheel bearing is to load it up with the weight of the vehicle. you said its the front right wheel, so you would take a sharp left turn, that would put the vehicle waight in the right side, and it should make a grinding noise.
i replaced my front left hub, the noise started out just on turns, and as it got worse it started doing it all the time at highway speeds. its time consuming, but you dont have to disconnect brake lines or ball joints. pop the wheel off, take caliper and rotor off, (hang caliper inside wheel well, out of the way, with brake lines attached) then there are three bolts that are a pain in the ass to losen and then its just remove and replace.

whens the last time you washed your truck? - you might have mud or dirt rubbing onthe tire.

do you have over sized tires? - tire might rubbing on mud flaps.

Bonnie, you don't need to remove the tie rod to replace the hub. The only hard part for you I see is removing the really large spindle nut. It's a 32mm I think. And I believe it's supposed to be torqued to 185 ft/lbs. They recommend also replacing the locknut but some have posted here of re-using it and applying Loc-Tite to the threads.

Might I suggest, if you don't have any kind of service manual, that you at least spend 20 bucks for a Chilton's or Hayne's repair manual. They do have some good info in those.
