Subject: Injector sync didn't work!

Hi Guys, I had recently done the injector sync mod and I got worse gas mileage than before! I have a '98 V6 4X4 auto. w/ 198,000 miles on it. I have just returned my setting back to "zero" or CYL #1 mark in line with rotor. Something just isn't right I guess. Thanks in advance for you guys' help.

The only thing that i can think of is that you did it wrong. here is the way this works. The rotor turns clockwise underneath the cap. so toward the cab of the truck would be advancing the injector sync. by turning the distributor COUNTER CLOCKWISE you would be advancing the injector sync.

----O this would be 0

____O This would be +3

O
_____ This would be +6

Right. In other words, originally the rotor is on the line or to the left of it. That means that at TDC, the fuel injection is just firing, or about to fire (which is late). The goal is to make it fire just a few degrees before TDC. If the rotor lines up with the mark at TDC, rotating the distributor body counterclockwise a few degrees sets it so that the fuel injector has just fired a few degrees ago (BTDC). So make sure you turn the dist CCW and not CW.

Thanks for your reply guys. When I did the mod I rotated the loosened distributor CCW and got crappy gas milage using cruise control @ 65mph. The other day, I returned the distributor back to zero, or maybe a little negative and I got 295 miles on 17 gallons, the best milage I ever got on my truck. So, something else must be wrong. Did I mention the 200,000 miles part? Maybe I'm due for a timing chain mod?

you are way overdue, that it most likely the problem. I changed my chain at 105k and it had over an inch of slack in it. you probably are about to skip a tooth, i would do that asap.

a bad O2 sensor will kill your mileage too.

I suppose if you have a really bad spray pattern and bring it in early it could make things worse.

Ok I just wanna see if I got this right...I've been on this site almost since I got my truck (Jan) and I can't believe I didn't see this...that or I am blind. So I get my eng. at TDC check my dist. and if the pointer is at the CYL mark then if I loosen the bolt for the dist and I go counter clock wise a couple degrees I'm advancing it? Since it'll help with Mileage and power I figured it'll really help since gas is at 2.60 already and hunting season is comming up and it's a 4 hr drive. If I'm wrong about this can someone elaborate on this for me please.

daddio, I've got brand new o2 sensors.

I just got done reviewing Larry's article on the timing chain and tensioner. It seems that injector sync, has a lot to do with a well tensioned chain. Larry also shows you how to degree your cam while you've got your truck apart.

Adam, this is correct. And, yes, I'd expect that it only works well if your timing chain is not the original and is in good shape.

Did anyone notice that Larry addresses the timing chain issue by telling you to turn the crank clockwise and if you go past TDC you should not try to go back but continue all the way around?

Jerry makes a good point, for those of you who have not changed the timing chain if you go past do not turn it backwards.

And just for clerification on the timing chain issue, the reason a timing chain with alot of slack in it would cause a problem with the injector sync along with valve timing is because the cam is essentially advanced from the stretchin. which the distributor is turned by the cam.

Well guys, I just changed out my timing chain and tensioner and I am getting the same results. The injector sync mod makes my truck run worse than if I had returned the distributor to zero. My truck is a '98 and it already had a tensioner and double chain in it- stock! The chain seemed fine and probably didn't need changing, but I did it anyways of course. Oh well, I guess my truck doesn't respond to the injector sync mod. At least I know my timing chain is new.
