my '87 has a vapour lock issue. once the engine wamrs up it won't hot start. It cranks and will fire up eventually, but it takes a lot of cranking. It has a new fuel filter and pump. If I drive on the highway its good for about an hour then it just dies. I give it a half hour to cool off and its good for another hour. This is the first summer I have owned the truck. The carb has a thick gasket and a one inch riser that I belive is to help disipate heat. The cat has been replaced with straight pipe. I took the belt off the air pump. The pipe that bolts on the top of both manifolds broke the bolt off on the drivers side so I patched the hole and plugged the pipe. The o2 sensor and the sock screen in the tank are both new. Im curious the air pump may have something to do with it. Im also hoping that someone else has gone through this with the carbed motor. any help would be great.

try alumium foil around the fuel line along the frame where the line runs near the motor and fron the fuel pump to the carb, this will help deflect the heat or a cool can that you can pack with ice on hot days

I will try the foil but Im hoping for a better solution than having to pack ice around with me.

get one of the generic electric fuel pumps for carbs and install it near the fuel tank. It will generate enough pressure to keep the lines from vapor locking. The pumps are only $20 or so and it solved a problem that I had with a '76 chevy pickup. The manual fuel pump is having to pull fuel from the tank now it is beeing pushed to it allowing less chance for vapor to form.

Would that require any other changes? such as a pressure regulator and a return fuel line. And what would I do with the mechanical pump?

with mount holes and all
Puralator is 1 co. that makes them
i payed 19.95 2 yrs ago
no Reg. needed they push 5 - 7 PSI
it's all i run in my 83 Ramcharger (318)
truck runs great and starts better then ever

What about the carburator boilover. The way I understand it is that once parked the gas in the carb bowl heats up and boils over into the intake flooding the engine, causing the hot start problem. The electric pump would stop vapour lock in the fuel lines but not the overboil. Also does removing the air pump affect gas millage at all?

Make sure your fuel return line is still intact and in use, not capped.
If you've plugged the air tube that feed air into the exhaust on one side, you could be causing an imbalance in the engine since the air will feed at a higher rate to the open side, causing higher temperatures on that side. This could be pushing under-hood temperatures high enough to cause the problem.

Removing the air pump does not affect fuel mileage.
