OK, guys - lotsa good stuff here about installation of Harland Sharp 1.7's and where to get them, but who has had them in the longest, and what problems (if any) have you had?

I'm about ready to plunk down the dinero for them, but want assurance that the aluminum is going to last, and that I won't be getting back into the back pocket down the road.

There are a lot of manufacturers using aluminum and have been for many years. If it were bad they would have quit making them long ago.

I had heard some place that stainless ones were just as light as the bulky aluminum ones. Well now I know that is all bullsh!t. I have a set of both on hand right now and weighed them both on a precision scale. The stainless tip the scales at a hefty 218 g. and the aluminum is a paltry 155.1 g.

They might be bulkier and you may have some clearance issues with the baffles but that is easily taken care of. To my way of thinking it should take less energy (horsepower) to make the aluminum rockers do their job.

So, unless you plan on a blown engine in your future or repeatedly reving over 6000 grand, don't worry about it.

It shouldnt be a problem unless u have installed high tension valve springs and constantly rev it high.(like n56629 mentioned)

I myself have worked with aluminum and tend avoid it when used in certain parts especially ones that go under dynamic stress and will be used for very long periods of time.

They have graphs on some of the aluminum RRs but they only showed problems when reved at 6,000+ rpm for extended periods of time usually comboed with high tension springs. (stress cracks an flexing and then finally breaking) Aluminum does this cause it has a short stress life.

Actually, I'm beginning to regret keeping the stainless and selling the aluminum. For my use I don't need the extra valve train weight. I never expect to exceed 5500 rpm and with the nearest track 80 miles away I'm not going to make too many trips down the quarter mile either.

You are right about the springs and the accelerated fatigue. However, on a daily driver, they will last the life of the vehicle and then some.

Cool! Thanks, guys. You know, it's ironic. I've not been on the boards in months, and posted this yesterday. This morning, left the house to go to breakfast with the wife and the truck throws me a P0455 code. After breakfast, got on the boards, did a search, found that the P0455 says that it's a large evaporative leak, and immediately found a split hose. Replaced that in 5 minutes, reset the PCM by disconnecting the negative and turning the key for 30 seconds, and I was back in business in plenty of time to get the lawn mowed.

This board has been well worth the $30 I spent. Everybody - keep it up!! (Now, if I could just remember my password).

good to hear. this site can be quite helpful. as far as resetting the pcm, i've heard of a new way from thefastman.com. just pull the connection at the pcm closest to the firewall, that way you dont have to reset your clock/cd player. worked for me.

Yeah...Daddio I believe posted about that not too long ago as well.

I'll have to try it out next time I reset my PCM. Sure would be easier than loosening the battery connection, getting in the truck and holding the key in the start position, getting back out and reconnecting the battery...

it worked for me, i threw a random IAT sensor code after a tuneup, and did the pcm reset via the connector, and it went away, just like resetting from the battery but i didn't lose all my stereo presets and settings . pretty sure i read about it at thefastman.com under his article on 02 simulator installation instructions.
