Subject: water on drivers side and ac prob.

Message:
I have read and reviewed about 250 topics about water on the floorboards, here's my problem. I have a 98 Dakota 3.9 V6 that I just bought, I noticed while driving longer than 30 mins. or so the air would just go warm. I would wait 5 or so minutes and sometimes it would kick back on and sometimes I would have to turn compressor off and wait a minute or so and turn it back on and cold air again. I also have water on the drivers' side carpet, I have very little water dripping outside so I figure the drain is clogged and I want to check it tommorrow just not sure where it is. I bought a Haynes manual, very little help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If you look under the truck on the passenger side by the firewall, you'll see the drain. You may also be able to see it if you look under the door on the passenger side.

the case (contains both heater core and evaporator core) is in the passengers side and over the transmission hump.

Thanks. You can only do so much crawling and looking in a day before the old back gives out.

No ideas on the compressor kicking on and off. I've checked the pressure and everything, everytime I go to do the pressure switch check the clutch is always on.
Thanks for the help.

That's because the evaporator is immersed in condensation water and cannot absorb heat directly from the cab air, it's taking heat from the lukewarm water, so the efficiency is much reduced. Once the drain is unplugged and the water gone from the tray, the A/C should work normally.

Well, I checked and I assume the small stub coming out of the firewall is the drain, that's the only place I could see. It has a little drip coming out of it and a lot of cold air. Is this normal? How would I unclog the drain? What do you recommend.

well you can take a coat hanger if you can get up in there and insert it in and move it around until the blockage is gone or i hate to say it take out the whole heatercore/evaporator box and clean it out yourself

My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost! http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1275365

Try the coat hanger first, failing that, you'll have to remove the whole case which contains the heater core and evaporator core. It's not such a difficult job to do, but does involve alot - taking the dash out, glovebox, ashtray. And if you have water inside, you'll be spilling it trying to get the case out.

haynes has info on replacing heater core, same process for evaporator core and also tells how to remove the case.

Well, I used a smaller tube (stiffer) and ran it a good ways up the drain and finally made the turn. I didn't notice anything on it when I pulled it out but some water did pour out. I do believe this weekend I will remove the dash and and clean the box myself just to make sure. I have a 9year old daughter and whenever I start working on my truck she has to run in and give a blow by blow accounting of whats taking place to my wife and then the wife has to stick her "2 cents" in about why I alwlays do this or that, how aggravating! You would think I have a history of blowing my top when working on a vehicle!
I was reading that in the Haynes, looks like this weekend will suck.
Thanks for all the help

It's not THAT bad. I can pull the case in my dakota out in about 30 minutes now.
