Hey Tony. MSD Ignitions only work on non-solid core wires. I honestly am not sure what the means. My MSD wires are not solid core, and appear to be carbon fibres braided around a silicon core. You should make sure that those JBA 9mm wires are not solid core before investing in the MSD ignition system, because if the wires are solid core, the system will malfunction. Other than that, the MSD 6A ignition I installed on my '89 was a breeze. Have fun!

Hey man, sorry it took so long to get back to you. You definitely gotta check your spark plug wires, that is the first and most important thing. They cannot be solid-core.

Wiring harness, I couldn't say for sure. Some people have said that it helps with the installation on the Gen III's, but on my Gen1 I didn't need it. I just wired it in. So, if you have a gen I, you don't need a harness, on gen II and III dakotas, it is really opitional.

As for the rev control, you do not need it, but you can get one if you want. Iit depends on which model control box you are looking at. Some have an adjustable rev limiter built in, while others do not (some of these can be equipped with an optional, detached rev control). I am not sure it is necessary on the 3.9 v6 though. Which control box are you looking at?

Anyway, I have installed and MSD 6A Ignition Control Module and and MSD 6A Blaster II Ignition Coil, and that is all you need to install the system. All the installation material comes with the parts. Hope this helps!

Yeah make sure your wires are Spiral core. Not sure what the JBA's are though.

I'm getting the off road control and it comes with a hookup for a seperate rev control. I wanna get it because if I'm slippin while I'm off roading... well, you know. Just precaution. As with the harness, I have a gen III so I'd like less splicing of wires and such. I'll find out what the JBA wires are like. Other than that, I appreciate your guys' help. Thanks!

5pnt9ltrluv,

looking at all of the mods you get to put on your signature sure makes me wanna type all of mine up...
it would take a friggin lot of space!

the msd wire also have the least amount of resistance... at a local speed shop there is a wire tester with the top 8 wire brands all hooked up (not sure if JBA was on there) and you could run a resistance test on it. MSD won with about 50 ohms.

i put the msd 6a on my 98 3.9L. With a blaster 2 coil and 8mm wires. it makes it run a lot smoother. I did not get the harness. all i had to do was cut the plug off to the original coil and splice the wires there. It took about two hours for mine, Would of taken 20 min but i made a custom bracket and mounted it on the right fender oveer the the hole for the headlights. Also it was 20 degrees and snowing out. Looks nice and runs great. just have to go in for my rotten smell. ( cat i hope) good luck. Chris

The JBA wires are built by the same company that builds the wires for MSD. Same wire.

You'll only need the Tach Adapter if you're getting the P0351 code from the PCM. But...you really don't need it as that code doesn't hurt performance...it's just the PCM telling you that "Hey, the coil doesn't have a long enough Dwell Time" (multiple spark systems do this as they fire multiple times).

Ignition Control Module
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a little problem.
I have a 97 Dodge Dakota Sport with the 3.9 ltr. Magnum. I drove it home from work on Thusday, but when I got into it to go to work the next day, it would not start. It has no fire from the coil. Someone told me that it is probubly the ignition control module that is bad. My problem is - where is it?? I believe that it is on the passenger inside fender. A box with three big plugs in it.
Is this correct and can anyone tell me if this could indeed be the problem?
I've asked several 'mechanics' who tell me 'I'm not sure.' I'd have to look it up.'
Can anyone help??

The box that you are referring to with the 3 big plugs is the PCM (the truck's computer), not the ignition control module. The ignition control module is inside the distributor. I think that AutoZone and probably most other parts stores can check them to see if they give a fault reading. A bad one would give the problem you describe. So would a bad coil or a camshaft position sensor, which is also inside the distributor. Did you get an error code or a MIL light? If so, read the code and post it, someone can tell you what it is, or where to look it up.
