Message:
My 90 Dakota 6cyl is having is losing power.
When I get to around 50mph it starts lugging and if I give it more gas it will bog and not really recover. If I turn it off and start it again it will be okay, up to 50 again. It is getting worse. The mpg has gotten reallyyy bad too.

I've change the fuel filter, plugs, wires, rotor, cap and cleaned the carbon out of the holes under the egr. I think it's the egr that sits on the intake manifold? I've had the battery and alternator checked and they're okay.

Any ideas?

Thanks

PS: The codes I pulled and their description:
12 Battery or computer recently disconnected
34 (1984-86) EGR solenoid circuit shorted or open
34 (1987-1991) speed control shorted or open
NOTE: I don't have cruise control.
41* Alternator field control circuit open or shorted

Had same problem with my 89. It would run great when it was cold with lots of power. But as the thing started warming up it would lose power in handfulls. And the more gas I gave it, the worse it got, and the slower it went. All of these are symptoms of a plugged catylitic converter. If you don't have to pass emissions, then take the cat/intermediate pipe off. Be sure to take the O2 sensor off (or better yet, replace it while you're down there, odds are it's time. And don't forget the antisieze on the threads of the O2 sensor). Get a hammer and a long prybar, and beat the living piss out of the innards of the cat (little honeycomb chunks should be falling out). Once all the material is gone from the inside of the cat, bolt it back up and bingo, problem solved. Or you could have it replaced if you're into the whole "environment" thing. Let me know if this helps.
