I have been having a lot of problems with my engine overheating. I think that I have finally got it solved but now my oil pressure fluctuates. The needle goes from just left of center when I am stopped to about the 3/4 position when I get up and going. Is this normal. What could be causing this??

Mine does the same thing when my Coolant is extremely low. I have a leak and i have to replace my coolant every 3 weeks, so ive gotten low a lot and notice that it gets wild. Check out your coolant, and let me know if thats what it was....

If you have more than 100K on the engine, I would pull the pan and check for sludge in the sump and a clogged screen on the intake tube. Just pulled then pan on my 160K mile 3.9 and was surprised to see so much sludge/chunks in the sump and a partially clogged screen. Cleaned it all up and gained 5-8 psi at idle and 10 at speed.

If you'r gonna pull the pan, get an engine hoist. I tried it without the hoist and could not get the pan out simply by jacing up the trans.
It's a PITA, but so is buying a new/rebuild engine.
You may want to replace the pump and pickup while you have it cracked open. Pump should be less than $30 and same for the pickup.

The motor should always make more oil pressure at higher rpm's.(you're pump is turning faster) I would be more worried if you had no oil pressure. Mine does the same thing.

You will get a higher pressure when you are driving than at an idle. Brand new vehicles will do the same thing. I have heard that using a synthetic oil will help the oil pressure stay more constant. I use them and I still get some fluctuation, but not a whole lot. As long as you are within the good range, you should be fine. Check your oil level though, just to be same.

Replace your oil pressure sending unit next to the distributor (odds are it's leaking), then the fluctuations should return to a steady rise from idle.

your Haynes or Chilton repair manual. you shouldn't attempt to work on these trucks without one. only 20 bucks. good investment.

You cannot remove the oil pan on a V6 without disconnecting the engine mounts. If you'r not mechanically inclined, I would get a manual so that you have a good list of what to loosten or remove when removing the oil pan.
