My 93 Dakota with a V6 overheats only when at idle or low speeds. I think it may be a weak water pump. But i am going to buy a new thermostat this week in case that is the problem. What do you think? I also recently bought an electric fan and installed it in place of the stock. The stock fans clutch went out. Thanks for the help

What CFM does the electric fan pull? Might not be enough air flow.

The electric fan i installed is an Imperial 16 inch with i think around 2300 CFM. When i bought it they said it should be more than enough to cool a V6. I bought a new thermostat but i dont have enough antifreeze to change it. i am going to get some antifreeze tonight.

with a 12 year old radiator you may have some corrosion that is inhibiting flow through the radiator. Have it tested at a radiator shop

how much would it cost for it to be tested at the shop?

Pull the Radiator out and flush it out with your garden hose for a while then hook up an aircompressor to it to blow stuff out, you would be surprised what kind of crap can build up in there.

have you tried running a chemical flush before you run the garden hose?

i;ve allways had good luck
prestone makes a good one
follow the directions on the bottle then flush the whole system with your garden hose
new T stat and new coolant
we had trouble with my wifes buick over heating and constantly running hot
i did everything i just said and
2 yrs later the temp stays where it should
even stuck behind a pileup on the interstate on a hot sunny 102 degree day

Hello DakDan,

Just thought I'd give some perspective on your overheating problem. I had a O-heating problem when going uphill coupled with hotter weather. I had replaced the waterpump and belts 8-months previous so that wasn't the problem. Then I replaced the fan clutch ( not electric ) but no luck. So I flushed the rad with some Prestone product... but it still didn't get most of the crudde. I could be wrong here, so I venture to say that flushing the engine rad is effective for maintenance and some 'crudde' but not always. In my case it didn't work. My rad had about 80k and no maintanence, so my words might be from an extreme case. But in any case, it is good to check your equipment. My rad, regardless of the flushing, ended up having a corrosion problem on the exterior of its core. When I went to replace it, it was obvious that the rad had been shot!1 The 'fins' that normally would channel the air to cool the rad were now almost a powdery iron substance. I could basically brush them off with the back of my hand. Strange it still worked while idling.

Post any follow up questions if you feel to do so. ..

PS. I also replaced the t stat while going thru the whole ordeal... and well, I purchased the 180 as opposed to the 195 of my stock product. I am not so greatful for doing that, although I don't have any mods of interest or parts with any performance significance.

Good Luck.
