Daveskota,
If I was getting 19 MPG I would be doing cartwheels naked down the street! I think you should be happy to get that much. Of course, I am talking about my 4x4 and you have a 4x2 so that may be some of the difference, but 19 is still pretty good. I put an ARE tonneau cover on my truck a few months back and it improved my mileage by maybe 1MPG. I did it more for looks and security of stuff in the bed.

I made a bunch of upgrades to my 99SLT3.9Auto 4x2 which improved the power output, and I can get an average of 19mpg when I do mostly highway driving.
I think anyone getting 19mpg out of a Dak is doing pretty good. I'm still hopeful to improve it some more yet with a tonneau cover and a V8 TB.

I Got mine back to normal by what the dealer calls a "3 stage injector power purge" basically he cleaned up the injectors and scraped the carbon off of the part that lets the air into the motor, It was jammed at 1/2 so th motor kept jamming in more and more gas.

If you can get it hooked up to a computer, Theres a test that checks your cyl's at startup and normal Temp.. It is supposta be between -5 & +5, mine was +3 at start then went to +13 and up from there at operating temp.. Unfortunatly i dont know the real terms for the parts.

Hope that helps.

19mpg on highway ouch, i get that in town and all i put on my truck was a TBI spacer, cold air intake, under drive pulleys, and exhaust. I can tell i gained atleast 5-6 on the gallon on a couple hundred bucks. but in the long run it is worth it espically when gas is up to $1.50

I have a 3.9 in a full size Ram Van. Great power... great mileage... around 19-20 str8 freeway driving at 70-75 mph.

Only real performance tweak is a glass pack muffler.

I found my problem, the fan clutch was staying stuck on and it was making my engin work extreemly hard and was killing my gas milage, now that i changed it and cleaned the TB I am getting 16mpg city driving.

Jesse T.
P.S. If your fan clutch is staying on be ware of a big drop in gas milage.

I just installed the flexalite black magic 150 electric fan in place of my clutch fan and bought a set of power pulleys; this was worth an additional 3.5 mpg, I'm now pulling a sweet 22 mpg with my 97 club cab, it's been my goal to break the 20 mpg limit since I bought the thing. Also, make sure you don't rely on your overhead mpg display if you have one, mine is off by exactly 3mpg (always shows three less than what I really get) just do it the old fashioned way, see how many gallons it takes to fill the tank, and divide that into miles traveled since your last fill up.

That's what I do xlr. I have a book in my truck that I write down the date, mileage on the truck, number of gallons, and total price paid to fill up. I also write down anything else I do to the truck like oil changes, maintenance, tires, etc. Works great.

i went to the local neighborhood dodge dealer a week ago and i was a little perplexed... i want to know who is selling the DC guys their crack! they advertise the V6 Dakota SXT as getting 18mpg city and 19mpg highway. the 19 highway isn't bad... that's about what i get. but the 18 city? that's where the crack comes out. i'd be jumping for joy if i got 18mpg WHEN MY TRUCK WAS STOCK!

I just hit 60K and replaced my spark plugs and O2 sensors, spark plug wires. I also pulled my injectors and had them flushed. I replaced my stock air filter with a K&N filter and reduced the weight of my oil. With all that I'm pulling 23 highway 19 in city.

I have a 2002 Dakota as well, i'm getting a little over 20 mpg. The first thing I recomend doing to any vehicle is a performance ignition. I have an MSD 6AL on my 3.9, that alone picked me up 2 mpg . Not to mention an ignition is going to make your motor last atleast 1/3 longer than stock. Alot of the bolt-ons you see advertised don't give you the power at the rear wheels they claim, but they do give you the gas mileage.(in most cases) It only makes sense, get the air in smoother, out faster, hotter spark means the fuel is burning hotter and more efficient; and cleaner. Ect........ All this equals power, and gas mileage. My truck has a custom exaust with no muffler(very loud, not recomened), K&N filter with custom ram air(homemade), ignition, and a computer. I get great gas mileage, and decent power.

I have a 02 quad and the best i have got is 18.5 mpg made 2 trips to iowa from cal running 75/80 and around town 14. I know what has killed this truck is the precats.ITS a ULEV truck. I have flowmaster, headers, taylor wire, intense performance filter and tonneau cover And even tired amsoil oil for the hell of it and no mileage improvement I thought about after market ignition but had a jacobs ultra coil on my 93 and all it did was eat caps and rotors every 7000 miles and no real improvement. I thought about the MSD6 So any other suggestions

You can increase your tire height, taller tires mean less revolutions for distance traveled and that equals less gas burned. Tonneau covers help, I don't believe in ignition systems a voltage arc is not going to change the combustion enough to make all that extra gear worthwhile. One friend of mine got a special throttle body that allowed more air in, but he also had to reprogram his computer. He claimed a 4mpg increase.

That's sad... my '97 RC is about to turn over 110K and it gets a solid 18mpg mixed driving... and when I hold back off the pedal and drive it on the highway I can break into 20mpg range.

All mine has is a bed cover a K&N gen1 Airbox and an exhaust (no cat) that's about to fall off (its being replaced soon). Just keep up on your maint, change your oil, watch your fluids and keep track of what your truck usually gets. If you see a drastic drop look it over, somethings wrong your truck wont just magically start performing worse.

Are you saying it's sad that I only get 15mpg, I'm ecstatic, my old 92 RAM only got 12 at best, and it was only 2 wheel drive. I never have less than 350# in the bed (permanent weights in space between wheelwells and tailgate not on floor of bed) of the truck and have a ladderrack on it. This Dakota doesn't play it works, and I drive it 50-60 MPH on dirt roads. Yesterday when I posted this I had just delivered approximately 1200# of tile and tile related product to a client.

With gas prices the way they are and still going up. If you want really good gas mileage you should probably borrow the wifes car. Otherwise stick to mans vehicle like the Dakota and suck it up.
