Subject: need help - Jumping RPMs
IP: Logged

Message:
I have '98 3.9L 4X4 and for the last few weeks the RPMs have been "jumping" about 200-400rpms at speeds greater than 30 MPH. However, the speed remains constant, does not fluctuate at all. Occasionaly they will will fall right down and 'lug' the engine. At slower speeds the rpms are steady and things seem to run smooth. At first I thought this might be the transmission slipping at higher speeds but I've flushed the system (fluid looked fine), adjusted the throttle cable. Both made no differance.
I've read on this site plenty about the TPS. Could this be causing the problem? Is it worth the $50 NAPA wants for the part or am I just chasing my tail with this problem?
I've got 95,000 miles on it and really don't want to put a lot of $ in it. But if I thought $50 might solve things I would give it a shot.
Thoughts.......

Possible TPS
Also possible = torque converter lock-up ??

Can you actually hear or feel rev fluctuate
or strictly tach
If only tach = connection or tach problem ??

Here's the short version of my experience as posted elsewhere: I had several problems with my 2000 4.7 -including jumpy RPMs as described by you- that seemed to dissappear when I removed and re-installed my TPS. Well, after several weeks, the jumpy RPMs look like they're returning. I suspect the culprit is a faulty TPS, and in my case is the cheapest thing left to try.

Well, I guess I am leaning toward replacing the TPS only because there are SO many post on this site about them going bad. I should mention it is an automatic trans.

I posted about this awhile back and I never replaced the TPS. It went away for a while and now it is back and it is PISSED OFF!! I blew my power steering so when I go to NAPA to get a new one I will be getting a new TPS at that time.

I had the same problem on my 98 3.9. It started after putting on a few TB. I tried to pull the TPS off and put it back on, and it went away for a little, then came back. I bought a new one and it went away. (knock on wood) Not the cheapest thing at a Dodge dealer, about $75.

TPS is my guess as well because it was the
problem on my '99. Don't buy it from the dealer
it's way to expensive, buy it from NAPA for $37
or AutoZone for $40.
