I have a 98 Dakota and the speedometer won't read unless I go over 25 mile an hour. It's worse in the winter time. Does anybody know how to fix it ?

is the ABS/E-Brake light on too? if so it's probably the rear wheel speed sensor located on the differential housing.

Yes. Both my ABS and Brake light is on. When I took it to a shop the to have the electrical system checked out for the ABS and Brake Light they told me there was no communcations hat ever that means. They also told me it might cost me anywhere from $100 to $1500 to find the problem and fix it.
Is this easy to fix and can I do it myself ?

like 10 mins or less to swap out the rear differential abs/speed sensor.
i think i paid like $25 for mine at the dealer.

It all just started this afternoon on my 99 5 speed V6....ABS,brake lights both came on and speedo went crazy...IT also started to stall out at stops...No one mentioned the stalling problem....Is that related somehow?

WOW! You guys saved me a lot of trouble and some money...I went and changed the abs/speed sensor and all is well now...even the stalling out at a stop is fixed. thanks again, Jenks

It should be on top of the rear diff. On mine I had to spray some WD-40 and let it soak over night to loosen the sensor with a pair of channel locks. Then I had to lube the O ring on the new sensor so that it would side down and seat properly. When youe remove the old sensor be careful not to break it take your time and it will eventually come out.

I have a 97 v8 4x4 i bought and speedo not working. I replaced the speed sensor but mine was in transfer case. the only light I have on is the airbag, any suggestions on this cause my abs light is not on?

My speedometer works and for me on a 93 dakota, the speedometer works off the speed sensor off of the transfer case, so like others I replaced the ABS sensor, unhooked the negative of the battery to clear the codes and BAM still got the lights????
Now I have NOT looked into the 2 front brakes or did an ABS test, but what I read 90+% it is the ABS sensor, but not for me, and short ides here without doing a full over look?

Just replaced mine on my 99 Dakota 3.9 V6 and it
fixed my speedometer, abs/brake lights and seems to
fixed have the staling/idle problem. Thanks much
guys!
