one strange little quirk with my transmission (42re) is when driving around parking lots, slow streets, etc, and accellerating very lighty, it'll go from 1st to 2nd just fine, but if when im in second, and i let off the throttle to coast (20mph or so) itll bump into 3rd as soon as i let off the throttle. anybody elses do this? what could this be?

It's a nuisance sometimes, so I'll throw the lever in 2nd to avoid the clunk if I'm cruising at low speed.

yes very normal, i do as bob said quite often and slip the lever into 2nd. sometimes i do that with first as well when in heavy traffic because it goes from first to second extremely quickly and doesnt like to downshift unless you are nearly stopped. and this is all normal. i had it rebuilt 5k ago...
