I pulled the elbow off at the airbox today and opened the flap at the radiator for more air. Will this cause any long term problems? I like the way it runs now. I have a K&N drop in filter, AP3923's gapped at .040(.045 gap was to doggy), flowmaster 50 series single straight out the back into sweet SS dual tips, JB wires, brass rotor and cap. I think I need some more voltage to run a .045 gap. Would a cold air intake benefit any better than the way i'm set up now?

Giving the motor more cold air will not harm it
in any way.

There are a few more ways to gain some performance
and cost nothing but a little of your time

Get a 1/4 npt pipe plug remove the IAT located in
the #2 runner of the intake just in front of the
throttle body cable bracket and put the plug in
the hole

Now locate a spot about 6" from the throttle body
in the air tube your wires should reach, drill a
1/2 hole and screw the IAT into the hole as long
as the IAT picks up some engine heat this will
work great getting to far away it will read a
little to cold 6" is just right the IAT does not
need to be grounded

This will do 2 things, advance timming about 2
degrees and add more fuel giving better fuel and
timming curves and adding power

Moving the crank sensor down towards the oil
filter you can gain another 3 to 4 degrees timming
this will help accros the entire rpm range more
power and better gas mileage
be sure to remove the rubber grommit from the
crank sensor hole so the sensor will move over
http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html

Have fun!!!

After you do this consider a V8 or after market
throttle body

Doing these 3 things makes a very noticeable dif
in performance

Yeah, I forgot to mention, i did the timing advance. I will try the IAT. I know there was a big controversy on gas mileage with this mod but heard alot say that this doesn't affect gas mileage at all! Actually I don't think the truck does as good on gas with the timing advance and now with the elbow off the airbox. Could be cause i like to get on it now! Sounds just like a cold air intake. that elbow I believe seriously make a huge difference by taking it off. thanks for the help

you now have what i call the po-boy's CAI. if you want you can run some ducting from that round opening in the airbox to up in front of the radiator. that would provide even cooler air.

my '00 QC did not like it when i moved the iat so i put it back. i think each truck has it's own personality. try it if it doesn't work out you can always move it back.

tha main thing is to have fun!

Would a real cold air intake really do any more than the way it is set up now. they look great but will it improve any more? Will the rubber in the tubing to my air hat be enough to thread the IAT into or will i have to back it with a nut? that little piece of tubing is EXPENSIVE to replace. It's like $40 at the dealer!! If the IAT doesn't work then i've got a hole in it.

the only thing i think would improve it is take out that accordian rubber hose between the airbox and airhat and replace it with straight pipe. abs or pvc with a rubber coupling on each end. then you could put your iat in that.

I have an 02 3.9L and i have read a lot on these forums about removing the elbow and the rubber in the grill. Does doing either of these two void the warranty in anyway? Just wondering becuase i have the money to start modding now and figured why not start at this.

yes any of this stuff will probly void warranty but i'm not in warranty anymore so i try them. thanks "daddio" for that idea. Should i be worried about water getting into the airbox. Hopefully the oil base on the K&N will stop any water from getting sucked into the engine!

i removed that horn and flap about 2.5 yrs ago. unless you run in 3 ft of water you shouldn't get any water in there.
