Subject: anti lock brakes
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 96 Dakota ext cab SLT. In slippery conditions the front brakes seem to lock up to easy. I am told the truck has rear anti locks but when I looked for the fuse under the dash it was not there. I was wondering how the brakes would work if I disabled the rear anti locks. Why they don't have front anti locks as well makes no sence to me. I thought the whole reason behind anti locks was to be able to steer while braking in slippery conditions. Any comments or help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Rick

it's to keep your rear from slidding out in front of you. they did come out with 4 wheel antilock later. if your front lock up "real" easy... you might just need a brake job.

I've had a lot of experience with anti-lock brakes from a vehicle manufacturer point of view. My 99SLT 4x2 Auto/3.9 also has rear ABS only, and Intense is right, it's only to keep the rear end from getting ahead of the front end during a stop. The reason for not using 4-wheel ABS? $$$$$$. Driving in Wisconsin winters has taught me plenty about low traction conditions. One thing is I prefer a manual tranny for winter driving. My 99 Dak has an automatic. Quite ofter when coming to a stop on slippery stuff I shift the tranny into neutral. It makes the stop much easier and more controllable, like pushing in the clutch on a manual tranny.

as far as anti lock brakes are concerned i dont think that they are that necessary. if you get used to driving your standard brakes its just as easy to control a vehicle. (i know, we have 3 feet of snow on the ground right now (houghton Mi)). as andy stated putting it in neutral makes a big difference if you cant keep from sliding, but your biggest help is start slowing down before you get the the sign....it helps.

I have a 2001 Dakota QC Sport with the brake light and ABS light coming on. The light comes on when I travel down the road and hit about 40 - 45 mph. When I pull over and shut the vehicle off and turn it back on the lights go out until I hit right around the same speed. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure about this. Is the brake light and ABS light the same or different? I would check the brake fluid level. I think there is a sensor if the level is low. The sensor is probably in the rear so when you are accelerating the sensor thinks there is enough and when you jam on the brakes the brake fluid moves forward away from the sensor. Sound logical?? Check your front brake pads. You may need new ones. Just some thoughts.

As for rear anti-lock brakes, I think the rear works off a level (height?) where in panic stops the truck weight makes the front end dive and the back end lift. That's when the rear anti-locks would kick in. I'm not sure how to dis-able them.

NJQCDak, The lights are different lights, but come on the same time. When they come on it is at a constint speed. The brake fluid level is fine, right at the mark.

Thanks for your help.

I have a 2000 Dakota SLT, I have had issues with the brake lights coming on for months. I have had the computer reset twice and just got my truck back a few days ago from having it reset again. The mechanic who worked on my truck said he thought maybe it was the anti lock control module and he had called a dealership and talked to their head mechanic, who said that they have never had to replace the module and to reset it. Today, they came on again. I called my mechanic again and told him, he is going to rescan it and see what code comes up. I have priced a new module... let me say "ouch"...$307. I have had new pads and rotors put on my truck and the rear anti lock sensor has been replaced within the past two weeks. I have gotten used to driving my truck with the lights on and I know my brakes are going to work, but I am tired of the lights being on, not to mention should I decide to get a newer truck, having the lights on won't help any should I decide to trade it in.

NJ, the rear anti locks are controlled by the rear wheel speed sensor in the diff housing. if you hit the brakes and that sensor sees the ring gear stop it will kick in the anti lock.(simplified, but you get the idea)

Someone correct me if i am wrong, but if your abs and brake light are coming on that could mean there could be something wrong with your abs module OR your rear wheel speed sensor. The abs system gets it signal from the RWSS on the 98 and later model years. As for bamagirltonya with the brake light on, did you check and make sure that your emergency brake cable isn't loose and giving you a false reading?

I have had the sensor and now the module replaced and the lights came back on today. I had a "wild" idea to check the fuse. It looked fine, but I replaced it anyways. The lights did not come on during my drive home. They typically came on when I was approaching 40 mph. I took the long way home, lots of stoplights, my brake lights did not come back on. I would hate to think I spent nearly $300 for a mechanic to fix my truck and it boiled down to a fuse. I will see how long it takes for the lights to start coming on again. I will check the cable just as a secondary measure, just to be sure. Thanks for the info Doug, much appreciated.

doug, you're right. sometimes when that RWSS goes out the speedo stops functioning under about 30mph along with the lights(brake & ABS lights) coming on.

I recently took delivery of a used Honda Accord car (1993 model). When i was driving it home two days ago (just about 2 kms from the point of purchase), my ABS light on the dashboard came on and it remained until i parked and turned off the engine. The following morning when i started the car to warm the engine, the ABS light did not come on surprisingly. Since then i have not driven the car because i need time to change the oil. So what could have happened to the ABS? Why is the light coming on? Any idea?

I am the magic swammi of all mysterious auto mechanics, I can tell what is wrong with your car from anywhere and not even see it. just let me wave my "magic wand" ands fix it from afar.

if you really think anyone can do this, be stupid and respond.

there are over 50 parts per wheel in a brake system that can go bad, and about half of them will cause the light to come on, and via the magic of the internet, without seeing your car, we know what is wrong with it.

My light comes on soon after I start the truck.
Not the sensor.
Replaced the brakes but any idiot should know that with this it wouldn't be a preasure dirrerential problem. My brakes just needed replaced and I keep up on maintance. Even if I just turn on the ignition both lights come on.
I would also like to know where the DRAC modual is.
Does anyone know where I can get a COMPLETE wiring diagrams for my truck??????? If I had this I could fix this problem. Hayes manuals suck, suck, suck...
There for the idiots who don't know voltage from rearend fluid.
