Subject: Which Throttle Body do I have?

Message:
I just got my truck, 99 SLT 3.9, and wonder how i can tell if the owner before has already switched the TB. I looked at it and there is a 48 on it already (mm?) I have read alot about the subject and want to swap it over, but i am still a bit confused with the cable deal. If i get one off of a 5.2 or 5.9 of the same year will the end of the cable be the same?

Can you post a picture of it? If I remember right my stock TB has "V6" stamped on the top of it. Mine is a gold color. The only aftermarkets I've seen are silver in color. Do the bores look radiused? Is there an air "horn" stickin up above the surface?

All stock TB's are aluminum (silver) in color.

The only way to tell if it was modified or how much is to compare it to one that you know is stock. You can find plenty of pictures of both modified and unmodified tb's. Like mark said, it will either say v6 or v8 on the top.

Host it on photobucket.com. Then you copy and past the "Tag" and it comes up looking like this. You can also email it to me if you like.

N56629,

I sure like the looks of your "patriotic" intake manifold and throttle-body. That throttle-body looks like an F&B setup or is this something you set up yourself? You certainly have my curiosity perked up with set up.

Wadak, it's not an F&B, just a stocker that is slightly modified. You might say that I put a throttle body spacer on top instead of on the bottom. I get so confused at times. :-)

Here's another peak

Here's what I did after I got tired of that. Make sure you look closely

Here's mine, it does say v6 on it so i guess i'm looking for a v8 one. If i get a 99 v8 one will i have to switch the cable?

seeing how i have a 99 slt 3.9 and i just changed my tb 2 days ago you'll have to buy the v8 accelerator cable for the v8 throttle body. the v6 accelerator cable is held on by ball and socket where as the v8 one is held on by a disc. you'll see when u do it. if you buy it from the dealer remember to take off the map sensor and put it on ur v8 tb. simple bolt on modification :D

How did the 49mm work for you? I assume that you had have the v6 manifold bored.

N56629,
What I found with the 49mm is loss of low end torque at the higher end plenty of power. I have the bores on the intake manifold opened up to 50mm. All of my experimentation has verified what Larry has said all along. I'm currently running a F and B 48mm. Something I have done since using the 49mm is replace the cat. convertor with a high flow unit.

Dodgeboy who posts here occasionally, has recommended using a 50mm throttlebody and also a 3inch exhaust for racing. He has indicated the loss in low in torque is more than than made up for in high end pickup.

The 49mm unit was tested on a flow bench and flowed 711 cfm at standard testing pressure. It flowed enough it could easily work on a v8.

I noticed that your second throttlebody is a v6. So the v6 unit you are using on your v6 must flow pretty good to be used on your v8. That first throttle body you used looks very interesting. I would be more interested in knowing exactly how you developed it.

Like I said, the first tb simply has a spacer on top. The objective was to increase flow by giving it a smooth and uninterupted surface. The two parts were doweled and machined together. It required installing in two steps. In the end I decided that it was more interesting than functional. While it seemed to flow more than a 52mm, it wasn't worth all the trouble. I think that I can get the same result by modifying it similar to the work that I do on v6 tb's.
