Basic info- 93 Dakota, 3.9 automatic, with cruise. In the last couple of weeks, I had an intermittent problem (3x) of the tranny not shifting into OD after taking off in the morning. After ten or fifteen minutes, it would kick in and work normally. Today, I took the Dak on a 'working trip'- towed a Jeep Comanche pickup on a tow dolly 150 miles or so. Took off this morning, and all worked as it should- I used the button to shut off the OD, and the truck towed fine. The torque convertor lockup worked, and the cruise worked. Ran about 60 or so miles, and stopped for a break, when I got on the road again the cruise wouldn't work...and I also noticed that the torque convertor lockup wasn't working, my rpms at the same speed were about 200 rpm higher. Finished the run, and then had to run another 250 miles empty; in all that time, and a couple of brief gas stops, no OD, no TC lockup, and no cruise. Even with all that, at 65-70 mph I got 14.5 mpg. After arriving at my destination, I checked into the motel and let the truck sit for an hour or so; when I took off for supper, I had OD, TC lockup and cruise back! I'm thinking computer- when it gets hot, it goes open, but I'm assuming the computer controls the cruise and tranny OD and TC lockup functions. I've got a chance to buy a 'parts' Dak, but it doesn't have cruise....other than that, it's identical to my truck. Will the non-cruise computer work on my truck? Does this sound like a computer problem? I'm 400 miles from home, and it would be sweet to have OD and lockup (not to mention cruise!) on the trip home Tuesday, so any info is welcome.

There is a speed sensor on the tail shaft if it
has a bad connection or is bad you will have
no O/D or lockup or cruse control

3 wire plug just above the shift linkage drivers
side is the comp control wires center 12 volt
front O/D back lockup

The 12 volt is always there on center wire and the
comp ground to switch the sols to shift

the speed sensor is on the tail shaft check all
these connections and grouds a bad ground on
the comp will do that right behind the alt is the
comp engine ground

You can also jack up the truck and run with wheels
off the ground take a stick pin into each wire
front and back wire 1 at a time ground ans see if
it shifts this is called a forced shift and will
not harm the trans but will tell you if all is ok
internaly

now with a volt meter red to wire black to ground
run the truck and see if you get volts around 30
O/D around 45mph lockup checking the front and
rear wire this will tell you if the comp is
working it will not if the sensor in the tail
shaft is bad

sounds to me more like a bad ground or connection
the comps do go bad but that is very rare

Good, thanks Larry! It's an intermittent problem, I made it work on most of my trip back by not stopping for 240 miles (all interstate, no stops at all), and when I did finally stop for fuel, I popped the hood immediately and let it sit with the hood open (ambient temp was ~65 and windy) til I got fueled and pit stopped. Took off, no problems, everything was still functional. Stopped after about another 100 miles, didn't pop the hood this time, and lost cruise, OD and lockup when I took back off. This is the reason I am thinking it's a heat soak issue with the computer. The times it had acted up before were two of the hottest days we had had, and the truck was sitting in direct sunlight. After a few miles of 45-50 mph driving, OD and lockup came back after a stop. I will check the speed sensor and connections and make sure they're OK.
