Wonderful site. Just had my driver side door lock punched out and all my stereo stuff stolen. These locks seem so easy to punch out. Does anyone know of a way to beef up these locks or to prevent door release after it is puched out. Thanks for any help

I bet it's just a simple U shaped piece of metal that holds the
lock in place. I don't think you'd be able to place anything
behind the lock because the window gets in the way. You could
weld up some kind of heavy duty metal box behind the lock.
Probably more trouble than it's worth. If you tried to wedge
something behind the lock it might affect the ability to smoothly
turn the key in the cylinder.

A couple tips from someone who has been there: always remove
your faceplates on your stereo, don't put stickers from big name
manufacturers on the vehicle, never show off your stereo as you
are pulling into your neighborhood/parking space, keep the
volume down then. I've had friends who get flat black paint and
cover over the manufacturers' name on the equipment or use
electrical tape to hide brand names.

I had the same thing happen to me. Went to the dealership and bought these metal plates that go behind the handel, you go in behind the door panel. It has instructions on how to put them in. Took about an hour, and they cost about $30. Not too hard to install. and its like another mark says, its just a simple flat plate with a U cutout.

Since this was the second time in five months that someone has punched the lock out, despite the alarm system, I just decided to disconnect the lock from the door release assembly. I just have to use my keyless entry from now on to unlock the door (i now carry spare fob batteries in my wallet. If anything, the theft fiddling around with the lock might buy me enough time to get out there and kill them.

do that thing i saw on the news from europe you can push a button and it shoots flaming gas out in front of the door to roast an attacker...wire that up to your alarm system so that it shoots a burst of flame for every beep of the horn...that should fry his nuts next time he thinks about your stereo.

Yea angel, I have thought of that. But what can you do really? I live in a apartment complex, so my options are limited. The locks are so easy to punch out and unlock the door, and take the stereo. My the time you get your pants on and out the door, they are gone. Its just a poor design on Dodge's part with these door locks. Looking to maybe install a receiver in a non traditional spot in the truck if anyone has any ideas.

Donald B: just take another mark's advice invest in a stereo where the face plate comes out and don't leave cd's or anything in plain view for people to see and always turn down your volume before you come down your street, I live in an apartment too but i'm very cautious about what i do now, i had a sony deck ripped off from my truck about 2 years ago, but the funny thing about it was i took my face plate off but the a-holes stole the chassis part, damn! some peoples kids.

if you wanted to relocate the unit somewhere else try under your center console between the seats...as in vertical in the seat. it would be a cool look and would keep people from locating it. you could fill the stock spot with a set of analog gauges and make it look sporty. it would be a cool statement and keep theifs from thinking you had a radio.

I saw the other day at a local lock store one set of locks that use a kind of key similar to the ones used in the old car alarms (rounded shape), the locksmith toldme that these locks can't be opened by pulling off the door-lock, and they can't also be punched. (The only problem is if you left your keys inside the vehicle... ;^)
These are being popular here in Mexico for small cars like sentras, these are very common and easy to open by pushing the locks.
