ive looked all over this site to find pictures and directions but i cant find any so i guess i will jus have to figure it out myself. so the question is i am VERY tight on money, will porting and polishing my stock throttle body be worth the time and effort? i put on a cold air intake and it actually feels slower, but im not ready to put stock back on until i do the throttle body, any advice or tips thanks

Check the junk yards and watch eBay for a V8 TB. You should be able convert it for less than $50.

Time and effort...."Time is valuable, and often mistaken as free, and we're paying for it with our lives."
port & polish--You'll see small gains on the v6 tb. A lot of it depends on the size of your tb,42mm,44mm,46mm. of course the bigger the better. It's hard to believe that you couldn't find the info on this site, but anyway,,,.remove all sensors, butterflys, and shaft.Cut off the air horn(except where the air cleaner stud is),and blend in a nice radius from the top of the Tb into the bores. You'll feel a small tappered restriction just above where the butterflys are when closed, carefull grind that off & polish. Then the next opion is to file,or grind down the shaft, flatten it down to the level where the screw heads are,
(use locktight when replacing the screws). If you are really good w/ the grinder do a SMALL radius on the bottom side of the TB(don't get into the area where the butterflys sit). The airhat stud is 1/4-20 use all-tread and bend and 'S' bolt to replace stock bolt. Then while your in there do a Trottle position sensor mod. So all in all it can be time consuming, but it's nearly free (small) gains.
Do all of that and keep an eye out for a cheap STOCK v8 Tb (48mm), & you'll need a v8 Trottle cable, and new gasket. With the v8 tb you'll get nice mid range gains, 2500+rpms and some say you'll lose a little bottom-end, I didn't see that. And I have an extra ported and polished v6 tb I'll let go cheap. I'm an Gears10@aol.com , I cheak my e-mail 3-4 times a month( it's that time, value thing)........later,,Gears

Tools to do a decent job of porting and polishing are not cheap. Here's what someone did on the cheap.

Hi, Intense
Some people have the skills to do the work with hand tools and some don't. Unfortunately those that don't have the skills also lack good tools. And on the other hand I have people who have access to best tooling you can buy and they are still HACKS. If you have access to a good die grinder and suitable cutters, you can do a good job with modest skills and some patience. I didn't always have tooling that I have today.

The guy that produced that work of art probably wishes that someone would have shown him the possible results.

yeah.. well it's purtier than the first one i did.. lol

but that was with just a cheap little dremel. I've used a die grinder and had much better results.

now the ones you make are just f-k'n badass. I am not saying that just cause you have that machine, that it makes it easy and anybody could do it.. but if i had those kind of tools, i damn better know how to use em ;-)

with a careful hand an a good high speed D-G.. you could probably clean that one up pretty damn well.

btw, are you still reworking TB's for people or was that a one-time-deal when trying the different ones on V6's?

The freebes were a one time deal. I finally took the V6 TB off my V8 and installed it on a local V6. I would be modest if I just said he was very happy with it. I wish that I would have taken a ride before the swap. After the install we went for a ride and it easily reved up to 5000 before each shift (stick). Then he told me that he had rarely shifted much above 4000 because it just ran out of breath.

I just talked to him the other day and he said that there appears to be a problem. He keeps getting a code P1494 which indicates a problem with the "leak detection pump" Sounds like some people have this problem when switching TB's and other just have the problem whenever.

I told him he is welcome to bring it back, but he said that wasn't an option.

Believe it or not, I was not impressed when I returned my truck to the V8 TB. I have three more V6 TB's in the works and one is spoken for by someone that is currently running a 48mm F&B. He says he's unimpresse with it, but that leads me to believe he has other issues.

Now I just have to decide whether to use brass or titanium butterflies. Brass looks cool and titanium sounds cool.

Oops, hope I haven't hijacked this guy's thread.

What year is the v6 truck and what year was the tb you put on it? That can explain some of the leak detection pump problems..

I'm thinking it is a 2003 but I don't know why that would matter. I do know that there are some differences in the V6 TB used for the install and the original. The modded TB was designed for, I believe, a Jeep. It has two tiny holes, one in each throttle bore, just above the throttle plates. The left one is directly inline with the vacuum line and the one in the right side is channeled underneath the TB to join the one on the left.

I buy these TB's new and I have not had any problems with them. Right now my best guess is to plug the two holes as they may actually create a vacuum leak since they are ported above instead of below the throttle plates. Knowing the correct application for these TB's may help.

The picture of the "butt ugly" throttle body may be just that ugly. But I bet it still flowed better than a stock v8 one.

Little if any. I would think that it created a significant amount of turbulence and turbulent air generally decreases flow.

N56629,

Those two little holes in the bores are only found on obdI dodge/jeep tb's. They are part of the earlier evap system and will set off the leak detection pump when used on 97 and up trucks

Maybe, but not all 97 and up. It didn't throw a code on a '99. I suspect that you are basically right though.

Thanks, FVcker

evap system has the leak detection pump on all 97 and up trucks. They all operate the exact same way. Those above blade holes are a leak in the system. It will happen..
