Subject: Odd plug condition maybe a miss fire???
IP: Logged

Message:
I pulled all my spark plugs finding that the 1 and 4 cylinder plugs where very black. (plugs and wires were replaced 9,000 miles ago cap an rotor 3,000 miles ago) Thge other plugs look exactly how they were suppossed to.

When the truck reaches full operating temp it runs poor with occassional shudders at idle with occassional very bad hesitations leaving stops. Yet it only does this in the summer with 70F+ weather, in the winter it runs like a dream.

Ive tested a bunch of stuff i just want to see ur guys input on this... maybe i missed something obvious here.

Thanks

Possible # 1 and # 4 injectors leaking
cause these two cylinders over rich ( black plugs ) and also cause the ' shudder '.
Assuming the plug gaps were ok ?
Also were they indexed between 10 and 2
looking at , up toward intake manifold ??

It never hurts to do a compression test on all cylinders before you do much more diagnosis. misfires can be caused by ignition problems, injectors, intake gasket leaks, bad compression

Things i have done:
Check injector resistence (1-4=12.3) (5=12.1)(6=12.2)
I let it sit for 3 days and the system still maintains pressure.
Fixed belly pan, and built a catch can for blow by gases.

Ill go out and re check if the plugs are indexed and do a compression check.

Im running around a 165 compression on #4 and #2 (also found my gauge is leaking so the numbers are not accurate and probably low)
I also had to stop cause it started to snow.

Something did hit me though... I was wondering about the iac and the adjustment procedure for it maybe my butterflys are closed to much.

Here is something to try;

Try putting a finger against each in injector; you should feel a pulsing vibration with the engine running, pay close attention to the 2 problem cylinders the pulse on those 2 cylinders may be different. Another thing to try is to swap one the injector from a problem cylinder to another cylinder and see if the problem moves to that cylinder.

Check the resistance of each sparkplug wire with you meter should be any where from 5000 to 10000 ohms for each wire depending on length. Substitue a spark plug wire from a good cylinder to problem one and see if that changes the conditions.

What year is your truck and how many miles on it?

If you need injectors get ahold of Bruce at the following link:

http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/

I have ordered 2 sets of injectors from him, a good guy to deal with. Or you can contact him at:

Office-(562) 867-4999; or Cell-(562) 394-7218; FAX-(562) 925-7422; Email- bruce@fiveomotorsport.com

He can save you alot of money, I found to be cheaper to buy injecotrs from him than having my old ones cleaned.

Ive been out of town but had some chances to look at everything mentioned.

Injectors sound good even watched the rpms as we unplugged them to see if one cylinder is doing more work then the other.

What did occur to me is that i may be pinging but in the quite cab i may not be hearing it...
Sure enough after some testing i am pinging.

Ive already installed a 180 stat and ill be re checking my 3-4 month old belly pan an gasket.

Ok i modified the crank position sensor to pull timing. I found that wasnt enough so then i put the iat back into the manifold and it seemed like it was just enough to stop noticeable pinging and adding a home brew catch can.
Im sure if i run it hard the pinging will show its face but not to the same extent.
