Subject: Overheating when it is above 80 degrees.

Message:
My 97' V6 Dakota has started to overheat when in heavy traffic and/or above 80 degrees. I have noticed lately that there is a small bit of radiator fluid coming from the back(underneath) the engine at the transfer case near the Tranny. Does anyone know if there is a freeze plug that I cannot see? I have inspected the engine thoroughly with a flashlight above and below for leaks and this is the only spot. Has anyone else had an experience with overheating? Any help wrt engine diagnostics would help. Thank you very much in advance.

Could it be from the heater core? Should be located inside the dash on the passenger side. Need to remove the dash and glove box to get to it.

It isn't the heater core. There is no sign of water from the inside of cab... dripping from inside the transfer case.

it mostly might be from a bad head gasket or manifold gasket and leaking down on the T case and appearing to be from behind the T case.

I'd get a cooling system and heater core flush if I were you. Also check out your thermostat.

there are freeze plugs behind the flywheel. generally, freeze plugs fail due to the coolant never being changed. I dont know how much time, effort, or $$ you wanna invest --> stop leak is certainly an alternative! there are many causes of overheating - (thermostat, water pump, fan clutch, shroud missing) but my strongest suspect is the radiator. I dont know if you do your own work - you can get a new radiator for around $150 and install it in a couple hours.

How about a leaky heater hose at the firewall?

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.
