Subject: 88 dakota blown head gasket

Hey guys,

was looking for some info and stumbled upon this site....

a friend of mine and I have been working on changing the head gaskets on his 88 dakota. Took the heads off and had them gone over at the shop to make sure they were ok to put back on.

Got everything put back together and started it up. There is now a tapping sound coming from the pass side head and white smoke is coming out of the tailpipe. There was still coolant in the oil and we have drained/replaced the oil twice now.

the side the tapping sound is coming from is the opposite side of the blown head gasket if that makes any difference.

any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

the tapping is more than likely a lifter,
that may go away with some running time

anti-freeze in the oil maybe left over from the blowin head gasket, keep a eye on the coolant and the oil,if one the coolant gets low or the oil level gets high then you probaily have a leak, theres always the chance that a head did,nt seal or the block may have a crack, you could do a coolant pressure leak down test, thats when you pressurize the cooling system and see if it leaks down or holds pressure

the white smoke could be the left over anti-freeze in the exshust, that should clear up after a few hrs of running

many thanks for the reply vern

lets say it is a lifter.....how long could one expect that to make noise for? It sure sounds bad and of course gets louder and more frequent when we rev the engine.

After draining the oil twice it now looks much cleaner so at least that is a good thing.

is there any other thing that could be making that noise given the situation?
