my friend and i did some work today on his dakota. we installed a cold air intake, gibson heads and and msd 6a with ss blaster coil. We changed the distributor cap and rotor. and wires to accel spiral cores. also install some bosch platinums. NOw there is this horrific tapping sound. we started the engine and let it warm up after each item to make sure each didnt cause any problems, we had no ticking until everything was in, but the engine is 1000 time better on acceleration than it was before. any suggestions? we also tried returning the iat sensor back to it original place thinking it advanced the timing to far but it didnt work.

Normal valvetrain noise - is he using 10w-30? Additive may quiet the lifters a bit. 5-30 could also help. What year? Early 90's have noisy timing chains. Multiport injection injectors kinda "tap" when they spit. But generally, 89-96 3.9's and 318's do make some noise. You guys did great on those ignition parts choices. You need a nice fastman throttle body to enhance the performance from those headers and intake. Add 2.5" tailpipe if you dont have it already. Hi flow cat, electric fan, and gap the plugs to about .040 and you will really perform great. I found the cooler t-stat killed mileage about 2 mpg. But I digress... as long as it's not pinging or blowing blue smoke, it's fine.

Are they just the regular Bosch Platinum's? With all of those other ignition parts I would think to go to a higher grade plug. When I worked at AutoZone I was under the impression that they weren't too great of a plug. I'd see if a different plug would make the difference.

the truck is a 98 dakota w/ 3.9, it only has about 36000 miles. he usesd 10w30 motor oil. the plugs we used were basic bosch platinums in the black box. when you stand infront of the engine it sounds like its the valve train ( noise from both sides), but if you listen by either of the front wheel wells its a more distinctive tapping sound. we also check the exaust heads for leaks and there were none. I think the next mod we may do will be the gears. The entire exaust except the heads was done about 1 month ago with a dynomax setup ( not the but but better than stock)

thanks
john
