Subject: How good is tranny?

I'm wondering how much longer I can expect the tranny in my 95 3.9L to last. I've got 173,000 miles on it - everything's running great right now. Any other major problems common with these engines? I'm moving out of the country for a couple years and can't decide whether to sell or store the truck. Storage will be free, so that's not an issue.

Basically, it's a pretty good tranny. It's derived from the old Torqueflite 727, which is right up with the C6 or Turbo 400. As long as you haven't beat it, and you've done some PM on it (filter and fluid changes, NOT flushes) it could last a LONG time. But, if you're moving out of the country for two years, I'd personally offload the truck and buy something different when you get back. Long term storage isn't good for a vehicle; seals, gaskets, etc. dry out, just lots of things tend to go wrong, and that isn't mentioning mouse or insect problems and all that. Since it's not a DeTomaso Pantera or a one of a kind vehicle, unless you have deeeeeep personal reasons for never getting rid of it take the money and run and buy something else later.

Yeah, that's pretty much the way I'm leaning right now. It wouldn't be completely in storage - my Dad would be driving it once a week or so, but still...since it's running fine right now I'll probably never get any more for it than right now.
