I have an 88 Dakota with a 3.9 231,000 miles. When I first got it a month ago,it ran fine. Had been sitting for 5 years before I got it.

Now when its cold and having sat for a few hours it sputters and stumbles and smells VERY rich, also pukes an enormous amount of black smoke out the exhaust. It will idle but even if I press the accelerator a little it wants to fall on its face.So before I drive it when its cold I have to sit and rev the engine and it surges real bad, eventually I neutral drop it and it will go.

When it does stall it acts like its flooded.I have to go WOT to get it to start again and as im cranking I dont see my oil pressure gauge move at all until it finally starts again.

But once its on the open road at HWY speeds it runs pretty darn good.Where should I start? I was thinking maybe the coil not sending enough spark to ignite the fuel in the cylinders, cause thats basically what its doing is loading up. What is the thing on the back of the throttle body that can be removed and cleaned with Carb cleaner?
Oh by the way I AM NOT getting a check engine light to come on or any other dummy light in the dash that would maybe trying to tell me theres trouble, the Fuel pump hums loudly, can hear it over the engine when idling in traffic, could that be the trouble? Theres alot more garbage on this motor emission and sensor wise than anything I have ever owned, any takers on what this could be? Thanks in advance
Chris

have you run the codes?

turn the key on/off,on/off,then on,count the check engine light flashes

you,ll get a series of flashes,1-5 etc with a pause then 1-9,if the first flash is 1 and a series of flashes after the pause is 5 then the code is 15,

run the codes a couple times to see if you get the same codes

sounds like the map sensor or the temp sensor making it run rich[check electric and vaccumm connections first]

for your other question change the intake gaskets, there not that pricey and with that mileage could save you from doing them later

How in the world did you guess it would be a code 15? Guess this is common. Actually what it did was

1 flash(pause)

5 flashes(pause)

5 flashes(pause)

5 flashes

I did this twice and came up with the same codes both times, but the check engine light never came on even when it was running like poop.

Well either way you look at it I suppose its a code 15 (5 flashes 3 times = 15)

My book says vehicle speed/distance sensor circuit. What does that mean?

I went back out, disconnected the NEG bat terminal, turned the key on for 20 seconds(I read this in here somewhere to reset the codes)Now I get something different

1 flash(pause)

1 flash(pause)

2 flashes(pause)

5 flashes(pause)

5 flashes

Now what code am I getting and what does it mean?

55 is end of codes.

I think you are missing one. thereis a 11 and 12, no 112.

12 is battery or computer recently disconnected.

Dan is correct, code 12 beginning of codes or codes have been cleared in last 50 starts

code 55 end of codes,

you won,t have any codes now until you run the truck 5-10mins for the pcm to read whats happening

if my memory is right code 13& 14 are the map

code 17 the temp sensor

the temp sensor is in the front of intake, driverside, two wire plug-in,check this for corrosion[greenish]clean, put some WD-40 or die-electric grease in the sensor, plug wire back in,if this don,t help you may need a new sensor
about $15

the map is on the pass.side firewall or tbi, three wire plug and a vaccumm hose in the center, two screws hold it on.this is alittle more pricey $35-55,try unplugging it to see if the truck starts and runs better

the speed sensor helps the pcm to no when to idle up when you come to a stop or put it in gear,if this is not working the truck will stall easy, putting in gear or stopping, check wiring from trans to pcm,its on the trans or tranfer if 4x4 where the speed o meter cable goes in
