Hi, i need some help trying to figure out what the cause of my high emmisions.
i have a 1993 Dodge Dakota 3.9 v6, 4x4, over 140k miles. only mod is a k&n FPIK.
NO (ppm) were measured at 1138 with the legal max of 482. Hc and Co were fine if not good. Hc was measured at 27 with the legal max of 84. and the Co was measured at 0.02 with the legal max of 0.57.
Any and all help would be appreciated much.

Bad catalytic converter most likely. That's what cause me to have hi NOX readings too.

Or bad EGR, or lots of carbon in the engine, or coolant temperature running a little hot.

Check - replace EGR valve/solenoid ..
Check vacuum hoses carefully.
Cat should be OK when HC and CO ok

I disagree with ?'s statement about the cat being OK with good HC and CO levels. I have an '87 Jetta that wouldn't pass smog because of a bad cat. The CO and HC measurements were well below the threshold, but the NOX was in the stratosphere. I was told to replace the cat, and I'd be OK.

This situation was preceeded by running too long with a bad oxygen sensor, which caused an overly rich A/F mixture. (My gas mileage was way lower than it should have been.) Basically I toasted the cat.

After replacing the cat the HC and CO measurements were marginally different; the NOX was now well below the failure point.

This was my experience. This just might be David's solution.

I'm having the same problems with NOx either you're not getting enough fuel to the combustio chamber or you're engine is runnig hot. The catalityc converter doesn't have much of an effect on NOx emmisions change th O2 sensor and saty away from high octane fuel

high NOX levels are caused by high combustion temperature. The factory emission equipment to keep this down is the EGR system. By adding exhaust back into the combustion chamber the temperature is reduced(the temperature is reduced because the exhaust is not combustible and is replacing fuel/air that is)

Same concern. OK my 94 fails with high NOX just abouve the limits. At the same time CO2 goes up. As you do a steady acceleration from 20-50 nox rises. At steady throttle at 50 nox drops down rapidly, along with CO2. HC and CO are great.

Tranducer and EGR are new. EGR solenoid, (also for evap purge) are new.

I am a full GM tech, but hate working on my own OBD 1 Dodge.

Cat is 2 yrs old, no noise ever.

Engine stalls after it get above 95 ambiant temp.

Stalling occurs after letting off the throttle from a quick accelerate, like up a driveway.

Manifold vacuujm at idle was 15 ish.

Any ideas, truck running with 199 on the clock.

Also pinging when accelerating. Temps rung very good mid range at most.

My clock flashes 666, any ideas bud?
Another jar head mechanic thats all.
Set your clock to 745, your tranny will shift crisper!!!!
Polish your vacuum lines, extra 5 HP!!!!!
Drill 2 holes 4/8ths just below the AIC on the manifold and
insert copper tubes 11/15ths long......more air flow!!!!!!!!!!!

With the throttle wide open (engine not running of
course) take a flash light and look down the
throttle body. See if you see any tarish, gunk or
other residue down in the intake. The problems you
mentioned could be a bad intake plenum gasket.

Also how old is the intake manifold temp. sensor?
If the plenum gasket is worn or blown and/or that
sensor is old I would also change it.
