After a heavy rain, I tried to start my '02 Dakota Quad Cab with the 3.9L V6. Checked to see if I had spark from a plug, there was none, checked to see if i had spark from the coil, had spark, replaced the cap and rotor, finally had spark from the plugs but it still did not fire. Had plenty of gas. When I pulled a plug, it was wet. It sat for 30 mins while I got the cap and rotor. Would have thought that was long enough to let a flooded engine vaporize out. Took the truck to the dealer for them to take a look at it, and tried to start it again and it finally started. Still will have the dealer take a look at it but not sure why it finally started? Anyone have any clues to what the problem is? The truck has about 83000 miles on the engine. Thanks!

Sometimes the only way to get a flooded vehicle to start is to take out he plugs and dry them manually. If they get really wet they won't be dry in a half hour.

you probably had water in your distributor which would cause you to not get spark. once you replaced the cap and rotor you should have pulled all the plugs and dryed them and cleaned them so that your truck would start. your cylinders are designed to seal...not let fluid escape.

I had a similar problem with a car, it would not start after a heavy rain but would start after it dried out. Turned out to be the the spark plug wires. I was told that as they age they can absorb moisture and short out.

It turned out to be a coil that became defective.
