Subject: Clanking from underside
IP: Logged

Message:
When I am at speed (1500 RPM) I get a clanking metal on metal noise from the underside, very rythmic, very loud... above or below 1500 it goes away. Doesn't matter the speed, however in park it doesn't happen. Any ideas? I had a Cat disintegrate on me, had it replaced, then two weeks later the muffler , but still no fix... Its got me beat. Any help or insight would ne greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Did you look at your U-Joints? A dry or seized joint can produce a sound like that.

I greased the u-joints, ball joints and everything today, with no success. I also went through everything that could be loose, heat shields etc..nothing. The noise is bothering me less than the fact that I can't find the damn thing at this point!

I get that too. I was told it was my torque converter, but the truck runs and shifts fine. I drained the fluids and it went away for about a day. I was told it was my u-joints too but I figure it would make the noise all the time. I picked up a spare set just in case ($26 at napa). I figure at least its good to have a spare set in the toolbox for when I go wheelin. For now I just turn my radio up. Works great for me.

I just read a post that said it you hear a clanking all the time it may very well be the timing chain. A guy posted his starting rattling around 80k miles, and mine's at 85k. I think I just diagnosed my problem I believe, this may help you.

it would NOT be underneith it would be from directly in front of you while driving. sounds much more like one of his heat shields is about to fall off. there is one directly above the catcon and another directly above the muffler. if one of them gets loose it will sound as described

I found a loose heat shield over the tailpipe, I added a washer and it seemed to quiet it, but not stop it, I am going to get under again and see what Else I can do. Could I take it off completely, I wonder? It's the last heat sheild in the assembly, probably a good ten inches up, I am thinking I could take it off without major consequences. Any experiences? I am also replacing the timimg chain next weekend, I have 164,000 and figure its about time from reading on this board. Better late than never.

If it is metal resonating then something rubber pushing against it should stop it. Think of hitting a bell with a rubber ball attached to it. If you think it is the tailpipe then you can try outfitting something that won't melt on it... Just a guess and worth a try
