Well my days "Few in #" are over here in the Dakota forums.. Id like 2 say that I appreatate all the commentary here. I just sold my Dakota yesterday.. Gotta say I miss it a bit but heres why she sold..
When I bought the truck around 6 months ago the oil filter was new with a new oil change, By the time I calculated 3000 miles for the next change it was all over for that engine, I added oil as needed however, the filter had become clogged with who knows what?.. Soon after it was eating a quart of oil every 100 miles with an awefull lifter or bearing noise. I did some research and found that for the 3.9's this happens.. So beware ya'll and keep an eye on your oil pressure gauge,"Should change pressure readings with variable rpm's". Even with a partaily plugged filter I read it @ just under 40pnds cold, However it stayed around 25-30pnds when warm but never changed with increased RPMs. When I changed the filter the oil pressure changed like it was suppost to,45psi cold and with and increase of rpm it would stay just under 45pnds.
I also had the transmission rebuilt"1500.00" only to have it within the last week begin to hop back and forth from 3rd to 2nd and sometimes rev to 5000 rpm before engaging so.... After a lot of $$$$ went into my Dakota I decided enough was enough. I took the $$$$ from the lucky sale and bought myself a Dodge Larmie 2500 4x4 clubcab with a 300 hp V10.. Gotta say I love the power and even with the V10 wont be to dissapointed in the mpg at 11 mpg or so.. figure my V6 @ best even with all the mods had 14 mpg. I hope to find a good group of folks like I found here for my new ride. Thanks for all Ive learned and take care.

Gloomy.

Here's something odd I noticed about the oil pressure in my 95 CC 4x4 w/ 3.9. Up until a few months ago, my pressure would be stable. Then it started fluctuating a little - little high to a little low, did not matter if it was cold or hot. It did this for about 10k miles. After running 1 qt of transmission fluid in it for ~600 miles, all dino oil for 900 miles, engine flush and all dino oil for 2k miles I switched to synthetic oil. I am now on my 2nd all synthetic oil change and the oil pressure is more stable. Since the enginge flush, the pressure has been slowing getting more stable. I've driven about 400 miles on the 2nd all synthetic oil and it barely fluctuates at all.

I'm thinking that since doing the flush all of the crud that was built is finally being fully flushed out of the system and the pressure is getting more stable. I've ran several differnet types of oil and filters since and it's slowly improved through it all. I really like the purolator filters and am using them in my wife's grand am as well.

With only air intake, i'm getting 18-19 mpg combined city/highway.

I hope you enjoy your new ram. When I get a new truck, I am looking at getting a ram 1500 QC 2wd and keeping my 4x4 dakota for play and bad weather. My dakota is rock solid and easy to work on!

what the hell kind of oil filter was that?
i thought any decent oil filter had a by-pass spring,
meaning if the oil filter gets clogs
the spring is forced down and "flow ya go"

the theory is dirty oil by-passing the filter eliment is better then no oil at all

and seriously i'd like to know what oil filter you was running. thanks ..........

Oil systems dont' change much with RPM. They have a maximum designed pressure they will run at. Mine is always around 40 and doesn't "fluctuate" with RPM changes, in fact no vehicle I've had has that I can remember, except for one with shot bearings. If your oil pressure is low at low RPMs and goes up as you rev your engine, its probably a sign its pretty worn out. I don't know what happened to your engine, either the guy used some really cheap oil, or the engine had something failing when you bought it...it shouldn't fail that quickly unless something was really wrong....

I have heard that the oil pumps have a higher-than-normal failure rate. Monitor your oil pressure gauge. Any abnormal fluctuation means replace the oil pump ASAP.

oil pressure DOES go up with rpm, it has no choice, your oil pump is driven off of your a gear from your distributor and cam, that means that when the rpm of the engine increases the rpm of the pump increases leading to a higher pressure. so yes it should fluctuate.

Correct. Oil pressure at idle should be at 15-20psi (factory spec is no less than 6-10psi). At warm idle, it will be lower on the gauge and will rise with RPM's.

Oil sludge does build up in the Magnum engines so add about 1qt of Diesel fuel (yes...diesel) before each oil change (run for about 20 minutes). This costs almost nothing, works the same as the engine flush treatments, and is easy to get (no need to hunt around for it as some stores don't carry it...most do though).

One other item to check is the OPSU (Oil Pressure Sending Unit). The Mopar units fail quite often and I can count more than 5-10 a week at the dealerhip that needed to be replaced due to inaccurate readings and/or fluctuation...sometimes even no pressure.

I'd say an engine that showed 6 psi at idle was worn out. Oil pump pressure has little to do with RPM. A properly designed pump will produce consistent pressure across a wide RPM range, while the volume will increase with engine speed. I don't know where all this "sludge" would be coming from. My engine has well over 200k and I just had the valve covers off for a look...I saw bare metal, not sludge. Use some decent oil.
